The Mindful Golfer—Amazon Review

Mindfulness has been used for hundreds of years in Eastern spiritual tradition as a way to reduce tension and “stay in the moment”. The Mindful Golfer, written by a long time Buddhist practitioner and mental health counselor who has been an avid amateur golfer for 50 years, is an extraordinarily well-written practical guide to golf wisdom beginning with Golf in the Kingdom.

Altschuler’s writing is both funny and honest in describing the numerous ways his swing, age and emotions get in the way of putting the ball in the cup. Though one can disagree with some of his golf tips, which are often rooted in the pre-modern swing tradition, his infectious enthusiasm and evocative anecdotes are real aids to those of us who still struggle with and love the game.

Altschuler’s insights on the character and foibles of pros from Palmer to Woods are alone worth the price of admission.

What’s not to like. An enlightening and worth addition to my three shelves of golf books.

Stephen Altschuler in The Mindful Golfer creatively shares his awareness, understanding and experience of the connection between meditation, golf and life. Stephen's work is exciting, inspiring and absolutely useful in a noisy world where learning to quiet a busy mind can offer causal insight and behavior for improved golf scores and quality of life. As Stephen offers, good golf demands "improving and grooving your skills, and improving your concentration." His use of creative words helps the reader "feel" his message. Whether it is golf or life, Stephen's work is a true compliment to the legacy and legends of golf. If improved quality of life and golf are on your "to do" list, his offering can be a means to that end. Just learn to deliberately quiet the mind in the midst of constant chatter.

About the Author

Kirk Trigsted teaches mathematics at the University of Idaho and has been director of the Polya Mathematics Center since its inception in 2001. Kirk has taught with MyMathLab for many years, and has contributed to the videos for several Pearson books. Kirk is also actively involved with the National Center for Academic Transformation (NCAT).

Kevin Bodden is a professor of mathematics at Lewis & Clark Community College where he has taught since 1999. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville and a master’s degree in engineering from Purdue University. He has authored or co-authored ancillary material for numerous textbooks ranging from basic college math to calculus and statistics. He has contributed videos for several of these textbooks and has authored math content on grant projects for the Illinois Community College Board. Kevin is married with three children and is actively involved in their school and extracurricular activities. In his spare time, he enjoys soccer, camping, and geocaching.

Randy Gallaher is a professor of mathematics at Lewis & Clark Community College, where he has taught since 1997. Prior to this position, Randy taught high school and middle school mathematics for five years in Missouri. He holds a master’s degree in mathematics from Southeast Missouri State University and has completed additional graduate coursework at both Missouri State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He has coauthored ancillary materials for numerous math and statistics textbooks and has worked as a math author on several grant projects for the Illinois Community College Board. Randy is married with three children and spends most evenings actively involved in their activities. In his limited free time, he loves to fish the small rivers and streams of southern Missouri.

As it charts Xuan's fantastic social ascent, the novel provides a panoramic view of late colonial urban social order, from the filthy sidewalks of Hanoi's old commercial quarter to the gaudy mansions of the emergent Francophile northern upper classes. The transformation of traditional Vietnamese class and gender relations triggered by the growth of colonial capitalism represents a major theme of the novel.
Dumb Luck is the first translation of a major work by Vu Trong Phung, arguably the greatest Vietnamese writer of the twentieth century. The novel's clever plot, richly drawn characters and humorous tone and its preoccupation with sex, fashion and capitalism will appeal to a wide audience. It will appeal to students and scholars of Vietnam, comparative literature, colonial and postcolonial studies, and Southeast Asian civilization.
Vu Trong Phung died in Hanoi, in 1939 at the age of twenty-seven. He is the author of at least eight novels, seven plays, and several other works of fiction in addition to Dumb Luck.
Peter Zinoman is Associate Professor of Southeast Asian History, University of California, Berkeley. Nguyen Nguyet Cam is Vietnamese Language Instructor, University of California, Berkeley.

Best novel I have read for class

I was assigned this novel for a Vietnamese history class; I would not have even heard of it otherwise.

This novel is excellent. The writing style, translated from 1930's Vietnamese, is humourous, witty, and fast-paced. The luck, charisma, and quick thinking of Red-Haired Xuan is hilarious, and the plot is worthy of the best modern comedy movies (particularly British ones).

I have no clue how you would find out about this novel, but if you do, you should read it. It had me laughing out loud, and I am not a fan of historical or foreign novels. Considering that this novel is 70 years old and from a totally different language, it must be a masterpiece if to still be so good.

In addition to offering great historical and cultural perspective for anyone interested in the "American War" - the Vietnam War - and previous history...this book is just funny.

It is an intelligent, witty, insightful book, and yet is somehow familiar...almost 'quaint' - with characters who are endearing, comfortable and delightful even to an American reader many decades later.

If you want to read something that will make you laugh out loud then this book is the one. Reading the book for a South East Asian history class Mr. Phung brings light to a little know area of the French colonial in Indochina. Very well put together. You WILL enjoy reading this!

About the Author
R.C. Hibbeler graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana with a BS in Civil Engineering (major in Structures) and an MS in Nuclear Engineering. He obtained his PhD in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University.
Hibbeler’s professional experience includes postdoctoral work in reactor safety and analysis at Argonne National Laboratory, and structural work at Chicago Bridge and Iron, as well as Sargent and Lundy in Tucson. He has practiced engineering in Ohio, New York, and Louisiana.

Not the same as hardcover

The paperback version of this book is NOT the same as the hardcover. The paperback version is in black and white, says on the cover that it's only supposed to be distributed in India, is missing tables and example problems, and is not 912 pages as advertised, it's only 876. Inside the cover it says it's an "authorized adaptation" of the actual book.

Don't get paperback!!! Choose something else!

I got the paperback and I'm here to tell you right now not to get it. It is a copy in black and white stuck with a cheap paperback print of a book cover where it even says in the top left-hand corner of the book that it is not to leave (at least on mine) the subcontinent of India. Just rent or buy an American hardback and skip this mess. It was cheaply packaged - wrapped in paper with tape wrapped around some of it - and arrived half-crushed. It's missing tables that come in really handy as a student, and I'm not sure that it really is all the 9th edition. Be very cautious!

BE AWARE OF THE PAPERBACK VERSION !!! THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL CHEAP EDITION THAT IS PRINTED IN BLACK AND WHITE IN INDIA! THIS IS COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY SINCE IT DOES NOT CONTAIN THE TABLES THAT YOU WILL NEED FOR THIS COURSE.

It's straight to the point real world examples help to illustrate techniques in a logical helpful manner. This book helped me nail down a practical understanding of techniques that I only been able to understand as abstract ideas.
