Taking Our Cities for God
By Mohanan Unni
While curiosity about the occult and the supernatural pervades our society, the devil's best defense has been the successful delusion of mankind into thinking that the kingdom of darkness does not really exist. Consequently, there is a widespread ignorance about the evil power, even among Christians. Many churches that preach the existence of Satan and demons do not acknowledge that people need help and deliverance. John Dawson's experience and the word of God lead to another conclusion. John Dawson presents a spiritual and systematic way of understanding and dealing with the kingdom of darkness that tend to block the progress of the Kingdom of God in an urban area. He states these problems and offers a strategy for faith and intercessory prayer. In the fourth section, Mr. Dawson deals with the subject of crossing the Jordan to take the land. Christians were born to fight the spiritual warfare. Mr. Dawson challenges us to catch the demonic arsonist and bind the demon with God's power. He provides us with a theology of the unseen realm such as the Angels, the evil spirits and the territorial control. With Scripture and fascinating personal testimonies, he shows us the reality of territorial control and spiritual strongholds. Mr. Dawson gives us a five-step strategy for faith and intercessory prayer. This includes worship, waiting upon the Lord, confession, overcoming evil with good and travailing in prayer. This topic challenges our so-called "enlightened" western minds. It is not a scientific book but it is a biblically based theological reflection on the question of spiritual territorial control. Demonic influences affect many in varying degrees and the cities need the Gospel of Christ. John Dawson explains that Christians can take authority over the demonic realm and bring freedom to those that need it so desperately. Mr. Dawson speaks very effectively to a much-neglected aspect of the Gospel in the church today.

Marvelous perspective on how prayer works!
By Jane N. Ogg
I highly recommend this book! It is not only an inspiration to pray more, but there is tremendous insight into why prayer works, how to pray, spiritual warfare, and God's perspective on your town. Especially enlightening was the section that teaches you how to examine the past to discover the strengths and weaknesses of your city.

This is easy reading and well worth the time it takes to read it.

Where is that in the Bible?
By audie
I've read the Kindle version of this book so I'll use the section numbers for reference, but that may not help anyone with a paper version of the book. The Kindle verson has 2018 locations, so you may be able to use that to help find roughly where the part referenced is located.

In this book, Dawson writes so many things that simply left me asking "Where is that in the Bible?"

For example, in locations 105-106, Dawson claims, concerning the account in Joshua of Israel marching around Jericho, that "Marching in silence around a wall for days on end made no sense militarily, but the people were gaining spiritual authority by the exercise of faith, obedience and self-control"; however, nothing is said about such a thing in the biblical account itself. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In locations 224-226, Dawson claims that cities have what he calls "a redemptive gift". He gives no Scripture in support of this statement. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In locations 235-237, Dawson says that he believes that God has stationed high-ranking angels over each city. He tries to use a part of Daniel 12:1 which talks about Michael, the angel who seems to watch over Israel, but that passage doesn't mention angels being assigned to cities, not even for that matter the city of Jerusalem, but only Michael having some of kind protective role over the nation of Israel. So "Where is that in the Bible?"

In location 346, Dawson claims that "In the place of prayer we will receive from God a specific strategy of spiritual warfare and a specific strategy of evangelism." I can't think of anyplace in the Bible where such a thing is said, and there is no scriptural support given to this statement. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In location 471-474, Dawson claims that "Unless you understand biblical warfare, you will be frustrated, angry, confused and ineffective in your ministry to the city...We need to bind the strongman and gain a place of authority over Satan before we will see the full fruit of our labors." There is one passage where Jesus talked about "binding the strongman", Matthew 12:29, but Dawson seems to be using it in a different way. Neither the Gospels nor the epistles tell the disciples or Apostles or the churches to practice "binding the strongman", that it is something they need to do. Nor does Scripture tell us to "gain a place of authority over Satan". So, "Where is that in the Bible".

In location 698, Dawson claims that "In every city there is a hidden eldership." I know of no biblical passage that says anything about a "hidden eldership". So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In location 924, Dawson claims that "When we have a working knowledge of the city, we are able to receive revelation from God about a specific strategy for ongoing evangelism and discipleship." I'm not sure where that is taught anywhere in the Bible. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In location 1004, Dawson claims that "We need to overcome the enemy before we employ other methods of ministry among people." In the New Testament, I don't see Jesus doing such a thing at the places He travelled to--He did cast demons out of people, yes, but there is no hint that He first tried to "ovecome the enemy" in those places. Nor is it something any epistle tells the churches to do. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In locations 1014-1015, Dawson claims concerning the resurrected Christ that "Jesus walked through walls in His resurrection body, because He was the solid object, and the walls were misty and ethereal (Luke 24:36-37)." But those verses say nothing about Jesus finding walls "misty and ethereal; in fact, they don't even say that at all that Jesus walked through walls. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In location 1022, Dawson claims that "The prayer of a human being can alter history by releasing legions of angels into the earth." He gives no verses to support this claim, and I can't think of anyplace in the Bible that says such a thing. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In locations 1200-1201, Dawson claims that "Everything born of God goes through a very natural process: worship, conception, gestation, travail and birth." He gives no verses to support this claim, and I can't think of anyplace in the Bible that says such a thing. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In location 1234, Dawson claims that "If you are negative and downcast, you will never minister to this generation." I can't think of a place in the Bible which says that only postive and upbeat people can minister to any generation. Prophets like Ezekial and Jeremiah didn't seem to have been overly positive people, and the Bible describes Christ as "a man of sorrow, and acquainted with grief". So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In location 1307, Dawson claims that "The best place to become familiar with God's voice is in the place of prayer for others." He gives no verses to support this claim, and I can't think of anyplace in the Bible that says such a thing. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

In locations 1558-1559, Dawson claims that "The level of a spiritual victory for your city is directly affected by two spiritual conditions: the intensity of your desire and the size of your faith." He gives no verses to support this claim, and I can't think of anyplace in the Bible that says such a thing. Indeed, if one took those statements of Dawson's seriously, one would have to conclude that Jesus did not have sufficient intensity of desrie and size of faith for a level of spiritual victory for Jerusalem, so that the people there would accept Him as the Messiah instead of reject Him and have Him crucified. So, "Where is that in the Bible?"

My conclusion: If the Bereans mentioned in Acts, who searched the Scriptures to confirm that the things they were being taught were really true, are an example we should follow, then Dawson's book is simply found wanting. Between statement made with little or no biblical support, and verses or verse fragments taken out of context, this book is very suspect biblically, and I cannot recommend it at all.

Amazon.com Review
In both Linux and Unix, becoming proficient at using shell scripts is an essential skill for both programmers and administrators. Filled with numerous exercises and examples, Ellie Quigley's Linux Shells by Example provides a comprehensive tutorial to two of the most popular Linux shells: the Bourne Again shell (bash) and the TC shell (tcsh). For any Linux user, this title is all you need to bring your shell-programming skills up to speed.

This book opens with a tour of the history and function of traditional Unix shells (from Bourne, C, and Korn shells) before centering on Linux variants, bash and tcsh. The text then turns to three powerful utilities: grep (for file searching), sed (for noninteractive file editing), and gawk (which allows programmers to write powerful scripts that process files using regular expressions).

There are dozens of sample commands to try out here. (With shell programming, the genius is truly in the details, and the only way to learn the shell is to try it out for yourself.) As an experienced teacher, the author provides a wealth of examples that take you through both the common and more esoteric features of these utilities. Instead of hard-to-decipher man pages, there she includes dozens of sample commands with correct syntax, plus clear explanations.

The rest of this book looks at the bash and tcsh shells in detail, from interactive mode to shell programming with full coverage of the basics of writing reusable scripts. Final sections of Linux Shells by Example look at common Linux file and system commands for easy reference, and the book ends with a useful appendix on quoting styles for five different shells. In all, this book's clear presentation style and plentiful examples will help any Linux user become a competent shell user and script programmer. --Richard Dragan

Topics covered: Survey of Unix shells (the Bourne, C, and Korn shells), survey of Linux shells (the Bourne Again and TC shells), processes, shell environments, tutorial for regular expressions, grep for file searches, the streamlined editor (sed), awk/nawk/gawk scripts, gawk basics and expressions, gawk programming (variables, arrays, flow control, built-in and user-defined functions), the bash and tcsh shells (interactive mode, programming tutorial for shell scripts), reference to common Linux/Unix utilities, comparison of shells, and tips for using correct quoting styles within shells.

From the Inside Flap
Preface

Playing the "shell" game has been a lot of fun with UNIX, and now with Linux as well. After publishing my previous book, UNIX Shells by Example, Mark Taub (the Prentice Hall acquisitions editor who keeps me writing books) suggested I write a Linux shells book. We both thought it would be "a piece of cake," or at least I did. After all, there shouldn't be much difference between the Bourne and Bourne Again shells, or between C and TC shells; Maybe just a few neat new figures, right? Wrong! This project was like writing a brand new book from scratch.

Although there are many similarities, the UNIX and Gnu tools and shells offer a plethora of new extensions and features. Linux offers not only the Gnu tools, but also a number of fully functional shells. Since I had already covered the Korn shell in detail in UNIX Shells by Example, I decided to concentrate on the two most popular Linux shells-Bourne Again shell (bash) and TC shell (tcsh).

Due to all the new features, enhancements, built-ins, etc., the shell chapters had to be split up, or they would have become unwieldy. What in the previous book consisted of two chapters has now become four. It was a lengthy, tedious process and when I had just about completed the bash chapter, I realized I was not using the most up-to-date version, so back to the drawing board I went. Since all of you will not necessarily be using the same version of bash, I have tailored this book to cover the old and the new versions.

The first section of this book presents the Gnu tools you will need to write successful shell programs-gawk, grep, and sed. These are the ideal tools for pattern matching, manipulating, text editing, and extracting data from pipes and files.

When learning about the shell, it is presented first as an interactive program where everything can be accomplished at the command line, and then as a programming language where the programming constructs are described and demonstrated in shell scripts.

Having always found that simple examples are easier for quick comprehension, each concept is captured in a small example, followed by the output and an explanation of each line of the program. This method has proven to be very popular with those who learned Perl programming from my first book, Perl by Example, and then shell programming from UNIX Shells by Example. Linux Shells by Example should get you up to speed quickly and before you know it, you will be able to read, write, and maintain shell programs.

The shells are presented in parallel so that if, for example, you want to know how redirection is performed in one shell, there is a parallel discussion of that topic in each of the other shell chapters, and for quick comparison there is a chart in Appendix B of this book.

It is a nuisance to have to go to another book or the Linux man page when all you want is enough information about a particular command to jog your memory on how the command works. To save you time, Appendix A contains a list of useful commands, their syntax, and a definition. Examples and explanations are provided for the more robust and often-used commands.

The comparison chart in Appendix B will help you keep the different shells straight, especially when you port scripts from one shell to another, and as a quick syntax check when all that you need is a reminder of how the construct works. It compares Korn, Borne, Bash, Tcsh, and C shells.

One of the biggest hurdles for shell programmers is using quotes properly. The section on quoting rules in Appendix C presents a step-by-step process for successful quoting in some of the most complex command lines. This procedure has dramatically reduced the amount of time programmers waste when debugging scripts with futile attempts at matching quotes properly.

I think you'll find this book a valuable tutorial and reference. The objective is to explain through example and keep things simple so that you have fun learning and same time. I am confident that you will be a productive shell programmer in a short amount of time. Everything you need is right here at your fingertips. Playing the Linux shell game is fun. You'll see!Ellie Quigley

Useful script writing skills!!
By M. Sale
I love the explanations of scripts in here... there are so many books that either give you a finished script or the same thing you find in the man pages... this book guides you to understanding the scripts that you write.
The format of "Example" followed by "Explanation" lets you understand exactly what is going on.
Skills developed cross over to other OSs like Solaris and HP with some minor differences.
For those who come to me with hopes of walking onto a customer site and understanding their admin scripts this is the tutorial I suggest.
I would have titled this book a marketing unfriendly "Scripting with grep, awk and sed on the Linux shells."
For all that... I would like to have seen really cool practical uses for activities like monitoring system performance, backup and recovery and interacting with applications programs (like Oracle's sqlplus and svrmgrl). That said, you can take the principles learned and easily apply them to these areas.
Also makes a nice reference with some stick-ums.

This book will make your life easier
By Batara Kesuma
I found this book very easy to understand, but if you are looking for something more advance, this is not for you. The style of writing in this book is very easy to follow. Like what is written on the title, it has lots of examples, and an explanation always comes after the example. It is not only about shell, this book also has good basic knowledge and information about grep, sed, and awk. If you use Linux, and want to learn shell programming, get this book. I also found that the examples used in this book were very close to the real life problems we often meet in Linux.
The only reason that I rate only 4 stars for this book is because some similar part gets repeated too often in this book.

Great Examples for Shell Scripting from Basic to Advanced
By A Customer
I just bought this book, and can't put it down. I have been working with Linux for several years, and find there is still a lot to know. This is a very useful book and reference already. It covers several topics from basic introductions to in-depth teachings. Great explanations of examples as well.

Who cheats and why? How do they cheat? What are the consequences? What are the ways of stopping it before it starts? These questions and more are answered in this research based investigation into the nature and circumstances of Academic Cheating. Cheating has always been a problem in academic settings, and with advances in technology (camera cell phones, the internet) and more pressure than ever for students to test well and get into top rated schools, cheating has become epidemic. At the same time, it has been argued, the moral fiber of society as a whole has dampened to find cheating less villainous than it was once regarded. Who cheats? Why do they cheat? and Under what circumstances?

The Psychology of Academic Cheating looks at personality variables of those likely to cheat, but also the circumstances that make one more likely than not to try cheating. Research on the motivational aspects of cheating, and what research has shown to prevent cheating is discussed across different student populations, ages and settings.

*Summarizes 50 years of academic cheating trends in K-12 and postsecondary institutions
*Examines the methodology of academic cheating including the effect of new technologies
*Reviews and discusses existing theories and research about the motivation behind academic cheating

Academic cheating has long been a problem in educational institutions. Research indicates that the majority of students have cheated at some point in their academic careers, and that cheating is highly influenced by both the demands of the learning situation and the student’s larger social context. The Psychology of Academic Cheating provides a summary of research findings on the personality and situational variables associated with cheating, the methods most commonly used to cheat, the motivation behind cheating behavior, and ways in which educators can remove opportunities for cheating.

The book is divided into four sections discussing
* Who cheats and how?
* What motivates cheating?
* How do students reason about cheating?
* How do educators respond to cheating?

The book discusses student cheating and teacher cheating, as well as the motivational profiles of students who report cheating. It also explores malleable definitions of dishonesty, whereby students frame cheating in to believe it is less morally reprehensible. Understanding this reasoning better presents educators and psychologists with opportunities for social-cognitive interventions. The book also explores at length how technology is being utilized to cheat in new ways, and what the cheating literature has to say about the increasing trend toward online testing.

Excellent reference material. Not as good for learning.
By Talyrath
The Project Management Communications Bible contains an encyclopedic listing of project management communication tools laid out by the knowledge areas and processes defined by the Project Management Body of Knowledge.

This is an excellent reference guide for any PMP who needs to look up a specific template or who needs to see what communication tools would best fit their needs. Likewise, it would be invaluable for someone setting up a project management office -- giving them a library of document templates that they could customize for their organization.

Be warned though, this document is more an encyclopedia than a textbook. It is useful as a reference, but anyone who intends to read it from beginning to end as a way to learn project management communication skills will find it difficult.

Beware of Kindle version
By A. Fairhall
Beware, little if any editing has been done to make viewing this on kindle easy. Also, although the Amazon write-up talks all about the DVD ROM and sample forms, you won't get it, or receive it electronically. Attempts to contact Amazon were ignored. Buy the paperback version.

PM Like a Pro
By Jim
This is a comprehensive project management book. It follows the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) and is an outstanding reference for any one who manages big and small. There are useful methodologies, processes and templates to make planning, managing and communicating during a project much, much easier. Having learned much of this information the hard way, i.e trial and error it is great to have a go-to reference that can provide a quick refresher. I found the examples especially useful as it is not limited to large projects and can be applicable to any size project. I know the success and failure of a project is largely dependent on the project management and the communication process--this book provides a one stop shop to enable anyone to be successful.

Get Dudley's Gear Handbook instead
By J. Wynne
A lot of this is "photo-copied" (quality less than stellar) from the Gear Handbook (also by Dudley). Most everything you need is there, the line drawings are acceptable, but image quality on many figures is awful. Consider getting a used copy of the Gear Handbook (First Edition, 1962 by Dudley; Second Edition, ~1990s by Townsend) instead of this book.

Excellent book, bad print quality.
By Rumen Deyanov
Excellent book, very well written with deep knowledge - just the right one for engineers in their everyday work related to gears and gear design. Unfortunately, not good printing quality, pictures are plain bad. Don't get me wrong, you can still read it OK, but it's highly irritating at some places, as one would expect higher quality print from such valuable volume. It's a shame for the publisher. I couldn't find the 1984 edition and had to buy this one. Still a very good book.

Excellant Book - But photos could be printed better
By SIB Modeler
This is an excellant book. I have an earlier version from the 1950's and both are invaluable resources at work. The text and line figures in the book are printed well, but the print quality of the photos is very marginal. I was surprized to see such poor quality in a brand new book. I think they are using the cheapest process available to make the book. However, it is still worth getting since the information is so well prepared and valuable for those who do gear design.

Review
This is without a doubt one of the best books on jazz ever written. Gary Giddins and Scott DeVeaux have achieved a monumental feat by creating a history of jazz that will appeal to academicians and aficionados alike. Thoroughly researched and carefully documented, yet written in an entertaining and enjoyable narrative style, this is truly a book for jazz lovers of all backgrounds. By telling the story of jazz in its full cultural, musical, political, social, economic, and historical context, Giddins and DeVeaux have given us one hell of a kick-ass book! -- David Baker, Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Jazz Department, Indiana University

Gary Giddins and Scott DeVeaux's Jazz cuts through the gibberish, racial politics, and ideology that typify so much of contemporary jazz criticism. This excellent book, which not only addresses musical theory but provides insight into the history of the art as well, will serve the general reader but can also be used to stimulate discussion groups and jazz workshops. -- Ishmael Reed, author of Mixing It Up: Taking On the Media Bullies and Other Reflections

Like no other history, Jazz involves the reader right from the start in an active listening role. The parsing of the selected recordings is brilliantly done, and this feature alone makes the book a must, for beginners and seasoned fans. But there's much more, all imbued with the coauthors' love for and understanding of the music, in all its many facets-and as a living, still evolving language. -- Dan Morgenstern, director of the Institute of Jazz Studies, Rutgers University, and author of Liv

In an innovative departure from previous approaches to the history of American Jazz, this eagerly awaited new text by Gary Giddins and Scott DeVeaux offers a unique combination of cutting-edge historical scholarship and experienced journalistic perspectives. This book is destined to become an important resource, one that confronts crucially important musical and social issues in depth-and with passion. -- George E. Lewis, Case Professor of American Music, Columbia University, and author of A Power Str

This extraordinary book is the one we've been waiting for-an exhaustive, multi-disciplinary, judiciously crafted history of jazz and its culture. It is sure to become the industry standard, cherished by students as well as aficionados, who may dispute its judgments but will surely keep it close at hand as an essential reference. -- Krin Gabbard, author of Hotter Than That: The Trumpet, Jazz, and American Culture

Good Book With Great On-Line Resources
By C Christensen
We're using this book as the basis of an adult-learning course, together with the Ken Burns' Jazz DVDs. It's a 2-term course, with 28 weeks (56 hours) total. We evaluated many books before selecting this one.

We wanted to emphasize the music itself, and we had pretty much given up on that until we found this book. There are accompanying CDs and DVDs (you have to buy them separately) with interactive listening guides (you read on-screen what's happening with the music as you listen to it) that are great. The text of the listening guides is also in the book, so if you want to watch the selections for free on You Tube while you follow along in the book, you can do that without extra cost.

There are many, many on-line resources on the W.W. Norton website which are free to use in conjunction with the book. There's an extensive library of short videos that show basic jazz concepts, quizzes, flash-cards, song clips, and many really interesting videos of the authors explaining various aspects of jazz.

The book is co-authored by Gary Giddins, one of the premier U.S. jazz critics.

This book and its associated materials have made it possible for our group of non-jazz-experts to learn a TON about the music together. It's been a wonderful resource. I highly recommend it.
