The Pacific War was the climax of the decades-long Wars of Liberation, and is one of the most important conflicts in South American history. After winning their independence from Spain in 1825, Peru and Bolivia became separate nations - but over the following years repeated attempts to re-unite them were frustrated by the neighboring powers, particularly Chile.

By the 1870s Chilean military superiority and expansionist policies exploded into full scale conflict. This book examines the troops, uniforms and equipment used by forces on all three sides of the conflict and traces the events of the war from the early naval blockades to the full-scale amphibious landings undertaken by the Chilean forces. The war ended in total victory for Chile, and that country's emergence thereafter as 'the Prussia of South America', while it cost Peru a lucrative province, and Bolivia its outlet to the Pacific coast.

Gabriele Esposito is an Italian native, and a long-time student of South American wars. He has previously written magazine articles on the War of the Triple Alliance amongst other subjects and is the author of MAA 499 Armies of the War of the Triple Alliance 1864-70, published in March 2015.

The War of the Pacific...

During 1879-1883, Chile fought a war with Peru and Bolivia for possession of the coastal strip along the Pacific Ocean that divided them. It is a conflict that barely registers in the U.S. historical consciousness, but the fighting featured difficult battlefields and some extraordinary examples of expeditionary warfare. Its end result rewrote the boundaries between the three countries.

It all started over nitrates on Bolivia's stark coastal plain. The war pitted Chile's small but highly professional army and navy against Peru and Bolivia's larger but less well trained and equipped forces. It ended with the occupation of Peru's capital of Lima and the crushing of an insurgency in the rugged Andes. In between, author Gabriele Esposito provides a terse narrative of the fighting, and illustrator Giuseppe Rava offers some excellent color plates of the wide variety of uniforms in use during the conflict. The text is nicely supplemented with period photographs, a few maps, and sketches of more uniforms. This is an interesting account of a conflict almost unheard of in North America, but with lasting consequences. Recommended.

Excellent book covering the most important and dramatic military conflict of the Andean region. It offers a very clear and objective review of the real causes of the war and the military operations. Good pictures, most of them fron chilean archives.

A fun, erotic, Sci-Fi adventure

Following Earth's occupation, Ally becomes a human slave, separated from her dead husband and best friend Eva. She's not very good at being a slave, however, and continues to get sold to increasingly brutal brothel owners because, well, she has a tendency to maim/kill clients or guards who mistreat her. At her sixth brothel she unwillingly befriends a young boy, Max, the personal pet of her owner. She's already killed a few o his guards, but when Alharad notices her affinity for Max he's finally got the right tool to bend Ally's strong will: threatening Max.

Eva survived her purchase, and thrived. She's married to the king of Drazlan and has been scouring the galaxy for Ally for years. When she finally finds her, she is on the verge of delivering a baby and cannot travel so she sends her brother-in-law, Kiehle, to secure Ally. Kiehle is a warrior, but he's no match for the cunning of a momma bear. See, Alharad plans to put Max and his friend Yoshi to work as prostitutes, and Ally knows a prince has his own transport. She constructs a half-baked, but daring, plan to kidnap Kiehle and escape with her two child charges.

Best laid plans of desperate women aside, Kiehle is terrifyingly impressed by Ally's ferocity and loyalty. He's attracted to her warrior heart as much as to her physical attributes and allows her to "capture" him. There begins the chase scenes and the "Ally can't trust nobody" interlude. There's some steam and a whole lot of humor throughout. Ally is a kickass heroine who's gonna save her kids, and herself, in that order. Kiehle is a great male lead--totally loving and sensitive, while also being huge and hot.

The reunion between Eva and Ally is tender and real. It's such a romp of a book, with appropriately times plot twists and great relationships--not just the romance, but also the friendships. Fun, sexy and funny--it's a triple threat. Kinda like Ally.

>I received this book from the author and from Paranormal Romance and Authors that Rock. I am an independent reviewer. This is the fifth book in the Loving Dangerously Series and ends with an HEA. The previous books do not need to be read in order to enjoy this one.

>The book takes place way in the future. The Earth has been overtaken by other aliens and humans taken hostage. Ally and Eva are both slaves being sold to the highest bidder. They vow to remain together, but Eva is bought at a market and Ally is sold to brothel after brothel. At each brothel, Ally fights to find Eva and escape. The last brothel has a child and Ally vows to submit if the boy is left to her care.

>Eva's fate was much kinder. She is a married Queen and never gave up looking for Ally. Once she finds her, she sends her brother in law, Kiehle, to look after her until she can legally free her. Trouble is, Ally doesn't believe Kiehle knows Eva and escapes with 2 children, while holding him hostage. The story is very disturbing. Forced sexual slavery is not a pleasant topic, but the adventure Ally and Kiehle go through is page turning. I can relate to how Ally never trusts Kiehle. She has been sorely abused, if she trusted him too quickly, the story wouldn't have had the same impact.

> This book is for an adult audience due to sexual situations. A lot of the story takes place in brothels and the descriptions are blunt. There is an underlying theme of anti slavery, which redeems the story and helps the reader root for Ally and Kiehle.

From slavery to happily ever after

The description of Ally's hellish life at the brothel was enlightening. I felt obligated to read every detail she endured because she deserved to be heard. Even though this story was fiction, her hell felt so real. I am awash in so many emotions and am so happy that this strong woman was able to find her happily ever after. There were also many...erotic moments that balanced this book out perfectly. I hope we can read more stories from the other women like Ally.

Winding up her book tour promoting her collection of lighthearted wartime newspaper columns, Juliet Ashton casts about for a more serious project. Opportunity comes in the form of a letter she receives from Mr. Dawsey Adams, who happens to possess a book that Julia once owned. Adams is a member of the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—no ordinary book club. Rather, it was formed as a ruse and became a way for people to get together without raising the suspicions of Guernsey’s Nazi occupiers. Written in the form of letters (a lost art), this novel by an aunt-and-niece team has loads of charm, especially as long as Juliet is still in London corresponding with the society members. Some of the air goes out of the book when she gets to Guernsey; the humorous tone doesn’t quite mesh with what the islanders suffered. But readers should enjoy this literary souffl� for the most part, and curiosity about the German occupation of the British Channel Islands will be piqued. --Mary Ellen Quinn

A True Delight!

What a wonderful book! Having just finished this one, I am still smiling and thinking of the characters. Had I the time and money, I'd be booking a trip for Guernsey right this minute. As it is, I feel as though I've already visited and been made to feel at home.

Set in both London and Guernsey Island, this novel follows author Juliet as she becomes friends with the inhabitants of the island shortly after the end of World War 2. Told in epistolary style, Juliet learns of the occupied island and its deprivations, as well as the resounding spirit of the people who live there. As she writes, she becomes more and more intrigued with the stories of the people who survived the hard times, and she decides to create a book based on their experiences. In order to gather more information, Juliet moves temporarily to the island and soon finds herself immsersed in the culture and relationships.

This is absolutely one of the most delightful books I've read all year. The characters are real, the relationships are unique, and Juliet is hysterically funny, as well as warm hearted and genuine. I did have a bit of trouble keeping all the characters straight in the beginning, but once I caught on, I was enthralled. The pages just fly by and while you will learn a little of what happened to Guernsey during World War 2, you will learn much more about love and friendship. Highly recommended!

For Lovers Of Literature And Life

I wasn't that eager to read this lovely book. The title sounded silly and I've read a few other books that were told entirely in the form of notes or letters like this one and I wasn't too impressed. And an aunt and her niece authoring a book together? I couldn't imagine it. Yet, miraculously, THE GUERNSEY LITERARY AND POTATO PEEL PIE SOCIETY manages to offer wonderful well rounded characters, a genuine sense of historic time and geographic place, some real inspiring stories of courage under hardship during World War II and a sweet if rather predictable love story.

The book takes place in England during the mid 1940's when the country was recovering from the effects of the long war years. The central character of the novel is Juliet, a thirty something single Londoner who has had some success writing a humorous newspaper column and is now looking for a book subject. Through chance and a mutual love of the power of literature Juliet begins corresponding with a group of diverse people on the British island of Guernsey who used books and the fellowship they found discussing them to help them get through the hideous occupation of their island by the Germans. The authors do a wonderful job giving unique voice and style to each of the letter writers (maybe having two authors really helped in this case) long before Juliet meets her new friends face to face. In the second half of the book, also written in letter form, Juliet is on Guernsey herself and this part of the book is not quite as strong as the beginning as the plot settles in to more of a traditional love story form and the literature themes are somewhat lessened. Still,through its final page, this is an original and entertaining book.

Wonderful

During World War II, the Germans occupied Guernsey in the Channel Islands, so close to France that, apparently, you could see cars on the highway on a clear day. The Germans built heavy fortifications against the islanders, built a concentration camp on Guernsey, and Guernsey's children were evacuated to England.

Juliet Ashton is an author looking for her next great idea, when she receives a letter from Dawsey Adams, who lives on Guernsey, about Charles Lamb, to whose works we was introduced through the Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society. The Society came to be in an unusual fashion: one evening after curfew, on their way home, some of its members were stopped by German soldiers, and Elizabeth McKenna had to make something up on the spot. Over time, the members got together whenever they could to talk about what they'd read. That's how Isola, for example, became addicted to Wuthering Heights.

Juliet lives in a London that was decimated by war; her apartment by the Thames has been lost, as well as all of her books (as you can imagine, horrifying). But her career as a writer is going well, and she has a potential love interest: the handsome and rich Mark. But Juliet's life changes as she receives more and more letters from the Guernsey Islanders, and she decides that she just might have to pay them a visit

The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society is an utterly charming novel, written in an epistolary fashion, between not only Julia and her new friends, but her best friend from childhood and her brother (who also happens to be Juliet's publisher). It's a sweet, funny novel, and it reminds me a lot of 84, Charing Cross Road--mixed with a little bit of Excellent Women (Penguin Classics). The characters are all wonderful--you can't help but wishing you'd known them yourself--even Adelaide Addison. Each member of the cast of this book has his or her own unique voice. Some of the stories told in this book are tragic; some are funny; but I guarantee that all of them will be touching.

As an author, she has written several prominent Access, Office, and Web-related textbooks. Ms. Friedrichsen combines her ability to teach with extensive industry experience. Her undergraduate degree is in Engineering from Iowa State University, and she holds an MBA from Drake University. Ms. Friedrichsen worked for a decade at IBM Corporation before becoming a well-respected Web consultant, technology author, and college professor.
