The heartbroken teen stumbles upon the world of Hester Prynne and her daughter, Pearl. She interacts with the characters and then returns to her reality, puzzled by what she has seen. Emma's New Parallel Worlds

Discerning YA readers who first met Emma Townsend in Eve Marie Mont's, A Breath of Eyre, will enjoy an evolving Emma in her sequel, A Touch of Scarlet. In the first book of the trilogy Emma is a sophomore, and true to its literal meaning, she is both `wise' and `foolish', but very likeable. In the second book Emma is now a junior and we quickly notice her new assertiveness and independence. Without giving away too much, Emma faces two of society's great social challenges: homosexuality and bullying. Emma's continuing story addresses tolerance and respect for others as it mirrors not only her growing acceptance of one of her peers, but also her views on how to eliminate bullying in her own school.

As Emma was transported back in time to the world of Jane Eyre in A Breath of Eyre, this time she is carried back to the world of Nathaniel Hawthorne's A Scarlet Letter. It is the world of the 17th-century Salem Witch Trials. It is the world of the Puritans who had little tolerance for anyone or anything that did not meet their strict religious beliefs. And Emma's school, Lockwood Prep, was built on the site of a Puritan plantation, reminiscent of old Boston and nearby Salem. What a natural conduit back into the world of Hester Prynne!

Ms. Mont does a masterful job of paralleling Emma's modern societal problems at school with her periodic encounters with the intolerance of Puritan Massachusetts. Her liberal use of colorful metaphors add greatly to her ambitious task of comparing the social taboos of the two very different societies and their respective time periods. It makes you ponder whether we have significantly improved as a society in the last few hundred years.

A brilliant sequel to A Breath of Eyre

Eve Marie Mont's A Touch of Scarlet, sequel to her debut teen novel A Breath of Eyre, catches up with Emma Townsend, who is now in her third year at Lockwood Prep. Emma navigates through the typical events of Junior year, such as PSATs, college visits, prom, etc. Along the way she realigns some old relationships, makes new friends, makes some good choices and a few she may regret. At the book's end, like Hester Prynne, heroine of Hawthorne's A Scarlet Letter, (on which this book is based) Emma emerges as a young woman who has the strength of her convictions. Readers will enjoy seeing changes in some of the other characters from the first book, as they also mature and evolve.
In this second book of her Unbound trilogy, Ms Mont tackles some weighty issues such as social ostracism and teen bullying. There are also plenty of fun passages, surprising developments, and interesting situations that keep the plot moving at a pleasant pace. The writing is fresh, imaginative, and contemporary with a classic twist. I highly recommend A Touch of Scarlet for readers of all ages, and I eagerly await the final volume of the trilogy, A Phantom Enchantment.

A great and much better sequel!

A Touch of Scarlet, from its title, is about The Scarlet Letter. It is not a retelling, far from it, but the main protagonist, Emma, ends up in a parallel world, the one from The Scarlet Letter, by entering a dreamlike state. This happens every time she ends up going near the place where she got struck by lightening (and survived). This book is also set in Emma's boarding school where she is entering as a Junior. The beginning of the book showed us that she is finally in relationship with Gray who was in A Breath of eyre. The plot does not slow down one bit, where there are a lot of romantic anguish concerning our couple along with some possibility of a love triangle, as well as a very surprising yet satisfying ending.

If you guys have read my review of A Breath of Eyre you would know that I enjoyed it but wasn't that impressed by it. Even with that I thought I would give A Touch of Scarlet a try and I am glad I did. In a Touch of Scarlet, you really feel that the characters are wearing an extra layer, whether it be emotional baggage or finding a friend in a person you least expected it from. Emma and Michelle's friendship was strained and challenged throughout the novel but at the same time new friendships were formed from two of the "fearsome four" in A Breath of Eyre, if you guys remember them, they are basically Emma and Michelle's mortal enemies. I love that Eve allowed us to find the good in some of these people and that they could repent for their wrongdoings and aren't all a bunch of heartless mean girls, though the other half of that crew proved just that. As for Emma and Gray, I just have to say that I was very disappointed in how Gray handled the relationship and felt very sorry for Emma. I felt that Gray, at 19, was too immature and made some decisions that you could tell were stupid from a mile away. However the star in this book is Emma; she was forgiving, a good friend, and wasn't the type that was consumed by any relationship troubles she was facing.

You are all wondering where The Scarlet Letter fits into all this, unlike A Breath of Eyre, Emma didn't spend as much time in the parallel world. I honestly REALLY appreciated that because I was more concerned with the development of Emma's actual life. The Scarlet Letter was more like a guiding hand, steering her in the right direction as well as opening her heart and mind to the things around her. A Touch of Scarlet

This is an pedestrian study from the noted and popular religion scholar, in which Armstrong takes a historical approach to myth, tracing its evolution through a series of periods, from the Paleolithic to the postmyth Great Western Transformation. Each period developed myths reflecting its major concerns: images of hunting and the huntress dominated the myths of the Paleolithic, while the myths of Persephone and Demeter, Isis and Osiris developed in the agricultural Neolithic period. By the Axial Age (200 B.C. through A.D. 1500), myths became internalized, so that they no longer needed to be acted out. Reason, says Armstrong, largely supplanted myth in the Post-Axial Period, which she sees as a source of cultural and spiritual impoverishment; she even appears, simplistically, to attribute genocide to the loss of "the sense of sacredness" myth offers. Armstrong goes on to relate that in the 20th century, a number of writers, such as Eliot, Joyce, Mann and Rushdie, recovered the power of myth for contemporary culture. Although the book offers no new perspectives or information on the history of myth, it does provide a functional survey of mythology's history. In this essay, superpopular religion historian Armstrong (Islam: A Short History, 2000) fastens the attributes of myth to the major chronological categories of human history. At each transition from the Paleolithic to scientific eras, she argues that a mythical conception of natural forces has drifted ever further from interpretation in pragmatic and logical terms, such that myth in modern times is a beleaguered species of fiction. To Armstrong this state reflects a profound misunderstanding of what myth is and does. Defining it as an art form that, on the assumption of the existence of an invisible realm of reality, protects one against the despair arising from the limitations of the tactile world (death in particular), Armstrong relates how mythology has historically been reformulated. She traces a theogony, illustrating it with examples from Chinese, Middle Eastern, Egyptian, and Greek cultures, as sky worship phased into anthropomorphic gods and then into ethical systems such as those of Confucius or Jesus. Short in length, Long in perspective

In a swift 149 pages, Karen Armstrong covers a lot of ground. She communicates the importance of myth. She shows how myth has evolved through history, moving through different phases (the Paleolithic; the Neolithic; Early Civilization; the Axial Age; the Post-Axial Period; and, the Great Western Transformation [encompassing the scientific revolution leading to the enlightenment, modernism, and post-modernism]). In each of these periods, we get a strong sense of how mythology shaped the fabric of society, and how social, intellectual, political, and economic factors in turn shaped mythology. One of the strongest sections of the book is the final 15 pages, where Armstrong depicts modern society in tatters due to its inability to formulate a coherent myth. This is an excellent overview of the subject, one that I'll return to.

Karen Armstrong is a terrific writer & I consider her the best religious writer of our time. She never preaches. Not biased. Just tells the facts as written over the ages. I have read most of her books. The best, I think, was "The Great Transformation." However I just finished reading "Fields of Blood-Religion and the History of Violence." This is an excellent read, indispensable for those who seek the meaning behind the global politics we have today. I recommend all of Armstrong's books to anyone interested in history, religion, politics, & the historical, religious figures of note. .

Just Weighing In

There are really enough reviews. Two comments to justify the four stars:

First the criticisms and comments below (above?): the greatest weakness in her book is that she offers her opinions and speculations as facts. They are not, they are something much higher. They are interpretations, often brilliant and well footnoted. The introduction left me cold and I disagree with some of the conclusions, especially in the last chapter. So what? We are different people. I agree that this should never be the only work you read about mythology. It might make a good introduction, if it is carefully explained that these are interpretations. Her failure to make this clear is a flaw.

Second, much of the speculation is brilliant, well argued, as supported by examples. She explains the role and nature of myth provocatively, in the best sense of the word, from her first chapter on the earliest myths to her last, which ends with a meditation on art, particularly modern fiction as a modern parallel to mythology.

Her writing is especially good and clear. Those who have found her writing too thick or two difficult should go back reading comic books.

Hyper-detailed instructions—with full color, easy-to-read and understand illustrations—help budding enthusiasts navigate EV3 Kits with clear language and step-by-step directions. Readers learn the basics of assembling a simple robot before being introduced to various programming tricks to be used on the EV3 Brick, the colloquial term for the Mindstorms mini-computer. Be forewarned that in order to take full advantage of the programming functionality of the kit, including the ablity to create and edit programs, users must have a computer to connected to their EV3 Brick (though basic programming on the EV3 Brick can be done without one). Each chapter contains several short challenges, dubbed "discoveries," which are cleverly accompanied by a legend: whimsical gear wheels represent the estimated amount of building time; tiny Microsoft Windows-esque blocks show the expected level of programming expertise; and a small clock estimates the length of time it should take to solve the challenge. Later chapters describe building intricate robots with fun objectives: a racing robot, ANTY (a robotic ant), and the SNATCH3R (complete with a robotic arm that grabs). Readers who are intimidated by the discoveries can skip these and instead focus on the building projects and the programming tricks that do not involve the use of a computer. The size, advanced vocabulary, and organization of the book evokes a science or physics textbook, which is warranted due to the amount of complex and detailed programming information contained within. However, colorful images keep it from feeling too academic. Perfect intro to Lego robotics

I got the EV3 for my 7 year old son as soon as it came out. By accident, we ended up with the educational version. The instructions provided were not clear enough to get us easily up and running. I started buying other EV3 books. They generally assumed that one had done Mindstorms previously. I just did not have time to help my son figure the thing out, and it sat in a box for months.

Then this book arrived. We are up and running, and my son is engrossed and so am I. The author gives terrific detail, and has small projects scattered through each chapter to help develop understanding of each of the features. We work through a few pages each evening, and do one or two projects (e.g., program the EV3 to do a figure 8). These projects are perfect.

As to the educational version vs the home version..... I splurged and got the expansion set. It turns out that this just has a lot of Technics-type structural pieces. It does not have new motors or sensors. The educational packs has all of the motors and sensors of the home version with two exceptions: the remote control sensor and related beacon. I got those thru the lego site. There may be a few add'l pieces that we'll need in the future to build all of the projects in this book, but we are 1/4 the way thru and haven't found them.

I'd also refer you to the book's website, which has a lot of useful information. The author has also kindly responded to specific questions (relating to education vs home versions), and has been quite helpful. So...can't recommend this more enough. I recommend it to all home users as well as school clubs.

Great book for EV3 and programming!

This is a great book. We have only begun, but it is already fantastic. It is not only information, but it is also a tutorial. The book includes 132 practice modules spread throughout the chapters which allow for an iterative process of learning. Additionally, the book contains 30 design modules that allow you to learn building techniques. My two sons and I (ages 9 and 11) are separately going through the book and practice/design modules with each of us tracking our progress on a tracking sheet. We do the modules individually and then collaborate to see how each of us is accomplishing the task. It's great, but it does still require you to think ahead and be organized. Just by completing a module, you don't necessarily become an expert on that topic. You will find that you will still need to play around with the features to better understand how they work. The first module that will test your understanding of previously introduced capability is Discovery Module #8 which tells you to have your EV3 make a figure 8. I was able to do it with four blocks (in the downloaded EV3 programming software from Lego).
Great book for learning how to use your EV3 and for learning how to program.

Not interesting to my sports & art focused 10 year old

We bought this as a Christmas present for our 10 tear old grandson, having bought the Mindstorms EV3 robotic kit the year before. (https://www.amazon.com/LEGO-6029291-Mindstorms-EV3-31313/dp/B00CWER3XY/ref=pd_bxgy_14_img_2?ie=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=MC1JTP8QH6VEFWKKD024) He never was interested in the kit; we thought this book would peak his interest. It didn't.

They looked fascinating to me, but his interests just don't go that way. Maybe when he is older.
