About the Author

Enjoyed reading this book about a couple reconnecting years after ...

Enjoyed reading this book about a couple reconnecting years after a brief affair which resulted in a four year old daughter which was unknown to her father. Emma was injured a an accident and left wheelchair bound until a risky surgery was performed which was successful. There was a few moments in the story where I wasn't sure where the story would end but it had a sweet ending.

Ben And Maggie had a 'one night' fling fives years ago. She left for college. He went on to California with his college buddies to make a name for himself. Now he is back. She is working for his father at Morgan's Run. This was as great story of second chances. She has a secret that she's kept from everyone but her dad. His mother wants him to settle down with the right type of woman. Not some stable hand. There are some angst going on. This is the first time I have read a book by M. Lee Prescott. Am looking forward to reading more.

I am not going to write a synopsis of the book here you can read that above, but what I will do is suggest you read this book. It reads really easy with enough back story and dialogue that it works. It's not a constant back and forth angsty drama that makes you want to pull your hair out but enough to keep you reading. It wasn't as clean as a christian romance but not smut erotica either. My only complaint would be Ben forgave awfully quick and easily. That said a quick read with a HEA. Can't wait to read the rest in this series.

Old School, But Useful

I wish I had read this book when I started studying hypnosis. Some of the book can be slow going and a little dated, but I found the book very useful, especially Powers' explanation of subconscious motivation. Skip the chapter on "Schools of Psychotherapy" if you've studied hypnosis and psychology already, and jump right into answering the questions in chapter 6. Read chapter 8 a couple of times when you start practicing self hypnosis, as this chapter is the most useful and straightforward explanation of how to apply self hypnosis I've yet to read. (I would also suggest reading Psycho-Cybernetics by Maxwell Maltz, since both books complement each other well.)

Badly out of date

This book, which was originally published in 1956, is badly out of date and is of little or no use in learning about the "theory, technique and application" (to quote the book's sub-title) of self-hypnosis. This book should really not be in print but instead filed on some dusty shelf in a university library for some graduate student to find who might be looking for a thesis or dissertation on early 20th Century psychology.

About the Author
David K Ferry is Regents' Professor in the School of Electrical, Computer and Energy Engineering, at Arizona State University. He received his doctoral degree from the University of Texas, Austin, and was the recipient of the 1999 Cledo Brunetti Award from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers for his contributions to nanoelectronics. There's a good story buried in here

This is the first Amos Oz novel I was able to finish. Though I enjoy his collections of stories and I tore through A Tale of Love and Darkness, I find a ponderous pace to his novels that makes reading them like wading through molasses, time for which is a luxury I do not possess. Without the Kindle and Whispersynced audio version and a long holiday weekend outwardly devoted to the mindless task of raking leaves I could not have completed this book, which devotes too much time to the washing of dishes, dish by dish, and the spoon feeding of a elderly man, spoon by spoon, between the plot and discourses that held my attention. Anyone who gets through this book will be rewarded by insights and and a thoughtful review of history and current issues that is not available from reading even the best regarded news outlets, but I fear far fewer than should will because an editor could not say to Mr. Oz about his many deconstructions of the routines of daily life, "Enough, already!"

A minority view of Middle East History

What if the losers wrote minority opinions on history? Judas is historical fiction to this effect. Jesus was a prophetic Jew peaching in the Galilee, as we all know. Judas, also Jewish, was a true believer in Jesus, who wanted to expand Jesus’ horizons to the cultural center in Jerusalem. Ben Gurion was blind to the inevitable future of armed conflict with the vast Arab majority in the Middle East. And so Jews have suffered, Christians have suffered, Muslims of suffered, lands have been fought over, and people have been persecuted unmercifully. Amos Oz has created three fictional characters who review what happened and speculate how it could have been different. Oz lived through the history in question in 1959 and so did I. The book is of interest because it is a good story narrated by an ABD grad student who studied the history of Jews and Christians starting with Judah. He gives up on his thesis and joins two woe begotten Israelis who got the brunt of this history. Though Netanyahu and Putin are not mentioned in the book, Bibi was 10 and Vladimir was 7 at the time, their ruthless characters are reflected in what happened and are part of the endless conflict that continues today.

A troubling read for troubled times

Judas is a deep intellectual discourse on the realization of the Zionist vision at one level. The three living characters inhabit a real and metaphorical house on the edge of the pre six day war divided Jerusalem. Having lived there at that time, and written a novel about it, I can attest to its powerful depiction by Oz. Two of the characters cling to the Ben Gurion line. The other adheres to her father's view that a unique Jewish state was an existential error. A revisionist view of Judas, as Jesus' only true disciple, is woven into the story. All three characters are deftly drawn and memorable. Like the house they exist on the tenuous border of their Society. Sheldon Greene,latest novel, The Seed Apple

An intelligent introduction to bilingual education and structured English immersion.

This book was listed as an optional text to read for a Structured English Immersion class I need to take. The history and politics of K-12 public school bilingual education in the United States are nicely introduced by James Crawford. The previous title of this book (for the first four editions), Bilingual Education : History, Politics, Theory, and Practice, was an apt title because that is what this book is about. There is a detailed account of how California's Proposition 227 (that mandated Structured English Immersion for nearly all English learners in that state) came to be voted in as law in 1998, and how bilingual education has withered away in California as a consequence. There is a chapter "Indian Language Education" that gives a bird's-eye view of K-12 public school education for Native Americans, many of whom even today come to school speaking not standard English but an Indian English such as "Crowlish" (a mix of Crow and English) or Navajo English. They are English learners, too. For Theory, the author explains that conversational English (BICS), which might be acquired in two years, falls far short of the academic English (CALP) needed for school, which would be acquired in no less than eight years. This book has illuminating statistics and a comprehensive bibliography.

Good overview of Bilingual Education in America

This book gives a fairly detailed history of bilingual, multicultural and ESL education in America, including the politics and theories behind it.

One pitfall of the book is that it is obviously written from a liberal Democratic point of view - fine and even humorous at times if you're a Democrat, but I imagine faithful Republicans would find parts of the book to be one-sided and disagreeable.

Overall, though, the book is an easy read and really expanded my knowledge of the bilingual education debate in America.

Waste of money but needed for class.

The majority of this book is about what is wrong with ESL classes and is full of statistics that seem one sided. There is no hard evidence in this book and it doesn't take the time to explain how to effectively teach ESL learners, it just talks about what is wrong with America's way of teaching.
Unfortunately, I needed this book for class but it was a waste of money.

An important collection of writings

"A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr.," edited by James M. Washington, is an impressive volume. This book brings together essays, speeches, sermons, interviews, and excerpts from King's books. Together, these many documents offer insights into the life and philosophy of a giant of the civil rights movement in the United States.
The book includes the "I Have a Dream" speech, the letter from Birmingham jail, the "Playboy" interview, and more. There are even fascinating transcripts from two television appearances.
This is a thought-provoking collection. I was fascinated by King's strong critique of that part of the white Christian establishment which opposed his movement. It is also intriguing to read that, apart from the Bible, King would choose Plato's "Republic" if he were to be marooned on the proverbial desert island with only one book. Also noteworthy is the emergence of King's multi-faith, global vision of humanity.
This is an important volume for those interested in African-American studies, 20th century U.S. history, or progressive currents in Christian theology. But more than that, "A Testament of Hope" is truly a testament for all people.

Essential reading for human rights advocates

I learned more about Dr. King and his philosophies by reading his actual words than I could have learned reading a history or biography.
I was surprised to learn that Dr King's journey was a long one even before civil rights movement, that he studied many schools of philosophical and religious thought. I was deeply impressed by his gifts with language, the ability to convey ideas in ways anyone can understand, and to inspire. Any writer could learn by studying his work.
If you are interested in human rights questions, I recommend reading this piece by piece, though it is a large volume. So much of what King said isn't limited to the movements of 50 years ago, but to the ongoing struggle for human dignity and equality.

An Indispensible Collection

A Testament of Hope is indispensible for a complete understanding of MLK Jr. the man. He was so much more than a monolithic figure of the Civil Rights movement. He was a pastor, theologian, philosopher, diplomat, husband, and father. A Testament of Hope helps the reader to grasp the multifaceted life of this icon of the twentieth century. This book lets the reader into the very human life of MLK Jr. Nowhere have I discovered a more cogent explanation of passive resistance than in the various speeches and essays contained in this book. If you are engaged in the struggle for civil rights or if you seek to better understand modern humanity more completely add this book to your library and consult it often.
