Unique and a fun adventure

I wasn't sure what to expect from this collection of books but I was glad that I was given the opportunity to read all 5 in exchange for an honest review.

Not having read science fiction in a very long time, I was super excited to delve into this one. It seemed like a great opportunity for a breath of fresh air.

The characters were engaging and very interesting, different to anything or any story I have read in this genre before. Though I can't remember the last time that I was THIS addicted to names I can barely pronounce!

It was surprising to see how intense and emotionally demanding these mere novella length books were. That's what caught my eye more than anything. That the author was able to create a world were even if it was within a few shorter than my usual length of pages written, she still managed to capture the essence, depth and emotional roller coasters of such a unique world.

I am not even going to mention the writing style. It was beautiful.

The things that made me mark it to a 3 out of 5, were merely around the idea of the story as a whole. Though I did enjoy that this was such a unique creation in comparison to books I inhale in a heartbeat, I realised why I haven't read a science fiction book in a long time. It's uncountably interesting BUT it just didn't deliver the emotional connection for me personally.

Braita is a very strong characters, and she develops so well throughout the story. I just couldn't get past some of the more less-believable aspects of the world.

Don't get me wrong, I would recommend this book to anyone that is looking for a fun, inspiring and interesting adventure, but I think you'd love it more if you were a die hard science fiction fan as opposed to the contemporary/romance/new adult avid reader like myself.

I would read more of Scarlett Dawn's books, especially with her writing style that is so beautiful and easy to read.

A Must Read... Like Now!

I absolutely loved this series!

Braita is a fantastic heroine who wants one thing: freedom.

After devastation hits Joyal, Braita and her best friend Jax find themselves in a while new world - and it is brutal.

Braita learns quickly yo rely on herself and what a self to rely on!! She is a heck of a fighter, smart as a whip, and holds more cards than she thinks.

Braita's weakness is her lack of experience. However, this helped make her character likeable. I rooted for her the entire way :) Even when I thought she was being silly or unfair, I could understand why.

The supporting characters are absolutely perfect! Jax is such a good friend; helping Braita acclimate to her new home as soon as he can. The Plumas, oh the PLUMAS! Sheesh... I can't say anything but Holy Hotness. That is all I will say.

Don't worry, this isn't a sap-fest - there is plenty of action. In fact there is a character that you will want to beat bloody with a tire iron (or whatever your weapon of choice is).

A must read IMO.

I love all work created by Dawn, she certainly has a nack for creating imaginative worlds and characters, so it was not surprising how much I FLOVED this one.

What would you do for your life?
For your freedom?
Would you be able to kill another living thing?

This is the story of Braita's fight for herself and her freedom

Braita is barely eighteen when her world and people ship her off to the planet Triaz after a huge devastation occur on their current world, Joyal, her future there is unknown, but there are talks of slavery. Triaz is ruled by the Mian, a race of barbaric "Aliens" that are bigger, quicker, and stronger than the humans of Joyal, where touching is most definitely permitted.

She is a feisty, spit fire, adventurous girl. We're taken through her journey into a world completely foreign to her and read as she navigates it all.

Throughout her journey she has one stable person in her life, her one friend, Jax, but physical intimacy is outlawed so the most they've ever done is just look at each other, and of course train together in combat.

Then there's the Plumas of the West and of the East. These guys are the heads of Mian society and Braita is bound to one pair through the mark she is given as a slave. These Plumas are interesting in their own rights. Each pair introducing Braita to a different section of Mian society and elevating her from her slave status. They care for her, but they also have the power to hurt her the most.

Who should she trust?

Cold Mark is a non-stop, science fiction, action adventure with incredible world building and also provides heartfelt, emotional connections to the characters created in this fantasy world.

About the Author

Sheldon Ekland-Olson joined The University of Texas at Austin after completing his graduate work at the University of Washington in Seattle and Yale Law School. He is currently the Bernard and Audre Rapoport Centennial Professor of Liberal Arts. For five years he served as Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and then for eight years as Executive Vice President and Provost of the university. He has authored or co-authored several books and numerous articles on criminal justice, prison reform, and capital punishment. Widely recognized for his commitment to teaching undergraduates, he is the recipient of numerous teaching awards. His current interests are reflected in the book manuscript, Who Lives, Who Dies, Who Decides?

Elyshia Aseltine is an Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice and Criminology at Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. She joined the Lycoming faculty after completing her graduate work in sociology at The University of Texas at Austin. Her research focuses on punishment and inequality in the United States and Africa.
