What makes this book unique is that the opinions all come from direct contact with advertisers. There is no B-school philosophy. Just real world knowledge obtained over forty years of real world work. One hundred percent of the net proceeds from the book's sales go to the Broadcasters Foundation of America to assist broadcasters who are in acute need. About the Author
Barry Drake is best known as a "radio guy," although he served as CEO of a sixty-two-station television group as well. He has been on the programming and production side of the radio business, sold locally in markets large and small, sold nationally, and managed stations in all formats, sizes, and market conditions. In 1984, Drake joined Keymarket Communications as general manager, first in Baton Rouge and then in Houston, before being named president of the group in 1988. Keymarket was sold to River City Broadcasting in 1995, and in 1996, River City was purchased by Sinclair Broadcast Group, where Drake was named CEO of radio and then CEO of television in 1999. He is no stranger to the finance side of the industry, having years of experience working with equity sponsors, the public market, and lenders to structure companies and deals. In 2002, Drake formed Backyard Broadcasting with private equity sponsor Boston Ventures. The group grew to thirty radio stations in six markets, then was sold in 2013. During his career, Drake stayed close to the action by committing himself to making sales calls, some with sales people, others on his own. He has called on a wide range of businesses: chains with billions of dollars in volume as well as single-location retailers grossing less than $1 million annually. What Barry Drake enjoys most is listening to business owners talk about advertising and what works.

If basketball coaching legend John Wooden had been a radio sales manager, this is the book he would have written. It's thoughtful, articulate, and filled with common-sense ideas, all informed by a lifetime of experience on the street and in the boardroom. A must-read for anyone entering the media sales game.

A most profound docu-drama and histograph of a broadcaster who transitioned from a DJ to music director to program director, successful radio account executive, sales manager, general manager, CEO of the nation's largest and technologically expanding TV empire and finally, owner of 62 radio properties, Backyard Broadcasting. As I transitioned through this amazing broadcaster's epoch, having provided his amazing network of stations, System 21, a national proposal development solution for radio and TV sales and management training....I remembered how he worked in the field with clients, sales reps and managers who, to Barry Drake, our author, is instrumental to the credibility built in making the client's business as important in its success as the stations' revenue growth. Barry Drake is a real-life, hands-on owner broadcaster story unlike myriad owners of radio and TV who are mostly accountants, investors and large groups headed by boards of directors who mostly have never been out there in the exciting world of media marketing helping local-direct businesses grow and hire employees. Barry's book is a great journey of his successful life and world in a great medium threatened by the test of time, technology and Millennials...

I absolutely loved this book

I absolutely loved this book...and not just because the author is my father! Growing up, people always asked me what my dad did for a living. I would simply say, "He's in radio." I kept it short and sweet because I honestly didn't know what he did on a daily basis. Well, this book explains it all and then some. It is inspiring and insightful and I plan on using the principles of selling he discusses in my own life. My dad has always loved radio and I am so glad he could share his joy and passion with the world.
