From the Author: Uncommon Techniques to Add Interest

Barber Pole Praying Mantis Boston Terrier

There's a common theme that runs through these three images, and that is that I used uncommon techniques to make them more interesting. Sometimes thinking outside of the box can add that something extra to your photos that makes people take notice.

In the first image with the barber pole that I shot on South Congress Avenue in Austin Texas, I mixed different shapes, leading lines going in multiple directions, and opposing colors to make an odd combination that adds a wacky element to the image, which makes it a little more intriguing. The image was shot with a Nikon 35mm f/1.4 lens with the camera settings of 1/2000 at f/1.4 and ISO 100.

The second image is a praying mantis that I found hanging around in a bush in my backyard. I used backlighting to silhouette the insect for an almost ominous effect that adds to the odd alien-like features of the mantis. In addition, I used a technique that's very common in photography that is called framing. This is where you use elements from the scene to surround the main subject to make it stand out even more. Using the background foliage to create a dark frame around the background of the insect, which is extra bright, really draws attention to the main subject. For this shot, I used a Nikon 85mm f/3.5 VR macro lens with the camera settings of 1/160 @ f/18 and ISO 1600.

In this third image of a Boston Terrier named Clementine, I used a bit of backlighting, but the main technique is getting down and shooting from a low angle. Being bipedal and much taller than dogs, we humans tend to look down on them and when we take photographs, oftentimes we continue this trend. Looking up at a dog isnâ�‚��„�t the norm so it adds something interesting to the photo. The Vari-angle LCD of the D5100 is a real help when framing shots like this! The other thing that I did to make the image more interesting was using wide-angle perspective distortion and an odd angle to add a little tension to the shot. This photo was taken with a Sigma 17-70mm f/2.8-4 OS with the camera settings of 1/30 @ f/2.8 and ISO 400.

Keep your mind and eyes open, break some rules, and make your images a little off-kilter to keep things fresh!

4. Black Rapid RS-4 strap: In my opinion these are the only straps to have. The Black Rapid slings over your shoulder, letting the camera hang by your side. You can quickly grab it, slide it up the nylon strap and be ready to shoot in seconds. Unlike traditional straps, the camera weight isn't on your neck, which can create tension headaches and neck strain. This is the slickest and most comfortable strap on the market.

5. Naneu Pro Military Ops Echo X camera bag: If you're looking for a comfortable camera bag with easy access, look no further. This is a messenger style bag that allows you to slide it around and quickly grab your camera. Another excellent field guide from J. Dennis Thomas

There is always going to be a learning curve with a new camera but having a book like this will help speed up the process. The first three chapters cover the basic functions of the D3100 and essential information about everything from lighting to lenses is also included. The best part of this field guide, however, is Chapter 8: Real World Applications. The inspiration photographs in this chapter are beautiful and if you are willing to go out in the field and work through the practice exercises you will have a better understanding of the D3100's capabilities, as well as your own capabilities as a photographer.

The book's format is user friendly: tips, notes, caution, and cross reference icons highlight important information, bulleted lists and diagrams make for easy reference. Thomas' writing is clear and to the point and he throws in a bit of humor to keep the prose from becoming overly clinical, which is refreshing.

Overall, the Nikon field guide series of books by J. Dennis Thomas have been extremely helpful as I have made the transition from analog to digital photography. I started experimenting with digital photography a few years ago when my fiance gave me a Nikon Coolpix P5000 camera and Thomas' Coolpix field guide as a birthday present. I worked through the practice photo exercises in that book and played around with the camera a lot. As a result, I learned how to take better pictures with a point and shoot digital camera and how to work with digital files. Still, I missed the flexibility that a traditional SLR camera offered and knew that if I wanted to take my digital photography to the next level I would have to purchase a dSLR camera. After extensive research, I decided that the D3100 was the best choice for my needs and budget and I purchased this book because I found Thomas' Coolpix field guide useful.

Informative and user friendly, this book doesn't sit on a shelf because I actually use it when in the field. A good investment if you are looking to expand your skills as a photographer.

A serious "how to" book about using your Nikon D3100

Nikon D3100 Digital Field Guide Review

J Dennis Thomas _JDT0505 is a trusted voice on flickr answering questions that photographers have about using their cameras, as well as a darn good photographer. Nikon D3100 Field Guide, published by Wiley Publishing, Inc, and is his 11th book.

At first I thought it was going to be another "What this button or setting does." book. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that this is a serious "how to" book about using your Nikon D3100 dSLR camera for photography. In the book Dennis goes in to detail about how he would approach shooting subjects and what settings he would use tackle that task. Not only does he teach you what each setting does in plain english, he talks about basic photography concepts that would apply to any camera. A nice addition to be book is a color checking card, which you can use to make sure that your color correction is correct when you get back home.

The later sections of the book are separated by subjects of photography. These parts are great when you are in the field getting ready to shoot sports for example. Dennis gives you helpful hints, suggests settings and other equipment you should bring with you.

Because the Nikon D3100 is also capable of capturing hi-definition video, this book also talks about how to capture video. He talks about the basics of shooting video using your Nikon D3100. Because Nikon's D3100 does not have many controls for video he talks about the terminology and how you can utilize the few controls you have to capture great videos.

If you are new to photography or new to the D3100 you will find Nikon D3100 Field Guide of value and true it its title, a field guide. Overall it's a great book for learning about you Nikon D3100 and photography.

Nikon D3100 Field Guide

Having just bought the D3100 and being new to DSLR cameras on a whole I had a bit of a learning curve to deal with. I knew I wanted to do more than use the scene settings but I had no idea where to start. A quick trip to the bookstore and I found this book.

I love it! It's got me out shooting everyday so that I can try out all the techniques outlined in it. It covers all the functions and menus and then some, including tips on how to take almost any kind of picture as well as covering the basics of apertures and depth of field.

It's a great book for anyone starting out!

Chapter One

Alternative Realities: The World of Dreaming, the Realm of Imagination

Our verbal patterns betray many of our automatic assumptions: If one discusses a dream with a friend, the friend is likely to ask something like, "Did that detail really happen, or only in the dream?" The implication is that what happens in a dream is not .'real." In fact, it would be more accurate to ask, "Did it happen in dream reality, or in physical reality? In the world of dreaming, or in the ordinary world?"

Both are genuine worlds, both are realities that truly exist. But the world of dreaming, if we only realized it, has more practical and concrete effect on our lives than outer events do. For it is in the world of dreaming that the unconscious is working out its powerful dynamics. It is there that the great forces do battle or combine to produce the attitudes, ideals, beliefs, and compulsions that motivate most of our behavior.

Once we become sensitive to dreams, we discover that every dynamic in a dream is manifesting itself in some way in our practical lives-in our actions, relationships, decisions, automatic routines, urges, and feelings. We believe ourselves to be in conscious control of these elements of life. But this belief is the great illusion of ego-control. These aspects of our lives are actually determined from a far deeper place. It is in the world of dreaming that their root sources are revealed in a form that we can see and understand.

Dreams express the unconscious. Dreams are dynamic mosaics, composed of symbols, that express the movements, conflicts, interactions, and developments of the great energy systems within the unconscious.

The unconscious has a particular capacity to create images and to use those images as symbols. It is these symbols that form our dreams, creating a language by which the unconscious communicates its contents to the conscious mind.

just as a burning fire inherently exudes heat, the unconscious inherently generates symbols. It is simply the nature of the unconscious to do so. As we learn to read those symbols we gain the ability to perceive the workings of the unconscious within us. This ability to produce symbols affects more than just our dreams: All of human life is nourished by the flow of symbolic imagery from the wellsprings in the unconscious:

The symbolic imagery of the unconscious is the creative source of the human spirit in all its realizations. Not only have consciousness and the concepts of its philosophical understanding of the world arisen from the symbol but also religion, rite and cult, art and customs. And because the symbol-forming process of the unconscious is the source of the human spirit, language, whose history is almost identical with the genesis and development of human consciousness, always starts out as a symbolic language. Thus Jung writes: "An archetypal content expresses itself, first and foremost, in metaphors." (Neumann, Great Mother, p. 17)

The image-symbols of the unconscious find their way to the level of consciousness mainly by two routes: dreams and imagination. It is easier to grasp the symbolic quality with dreams, for dreams often present mythical creatures and unearthly situations that would be impossible in everyday physical life. People are usually confused by the dream images until they learn that the images are symbolic and are not to be taken literally.

Since dream images make no sense in ordinary terms, people dismiss them as "weird" or meaningless, but actually, dreams are completely coherent. If we take the time to learn their language, we discover that every dream is a masterpiece of symbolic communication. The unconscious speaks in symbols, not to confuse us, but simply because that is its native idiom.

I was never able to agree ... that the dream is a "facade" behind which its meaning lies hidden -- a meaning already known but maliciously, so to speak, withheld from consciousness. To me, dreams are a part of nature, which harbors no intention to deceive, but expresses something as best it can, just as a plant grows or an animal seeks its food as best it can. These forms of life, too, have no wish to deceive our eyes, but we may deceive ourselves because our eyes are shortsighted. Long before I met Freud I regarded the Unconscious, and dreams, which are its direct exponents, as natural processes to which no arbitrariness can be attributed, and above all, no legerdemain. (lung, MDR, p. 161)

We may compare a dream to a screen on which the unconscious projects its inner drama. We see there the various inner personalities that make up much of our total character, the dynamics among the forces that make up the unconscious. These invisible forces and their activities set off charges, so to speak, that are transmitted onto the screen. They take the form of images, and the interplay of the dream images gives us an exact representation of those inner dynamics that go on inside us.

In learning how to understand these images, our conceptual starting point is our realization that they are not to be taken liter-, ally: We learn to look for an attitude, an inner personality, an inner development or conflict that clothes itself in the form and color of this image so that it may be visible to us in the Land of Dreaming.

4-Steps to Understanding Your Mind At Sleep

In my efforts to understand and deal with my child's nightmares, I have found respite in Robert Johnson's Inner Work. I have trusted his books for some time because he has a gift for using Jungian principles and keeping things simple. By using archetypal comparisons rather than personal anecdotes, his approach to teaching you how to explore dreams is direct and unbiased. He offers an overview of necessary terms and reminds us (quoting from Carl Jung) that "God speaks in dream."

This book does not claim to be the ultimate book on dream analysis but it gives you the tools to explore your unconscious in his 4-step to Active Imagination. His approach to understanding symbols empowers you to make your own definitions and associations, rather than telling you what they mean universally, because everyone is different - and that is so the case with my daughter.

If you are looking to develop the understanding your mind at sleep, this is a great introduction. I would also suggest The Nightmare Solution for other approaches on working out your dreams and We, He, and She by Robert Johnson.

Active imagination enables the conscious and the unconscious parts of ourselves to speak to one another. Moving us to wholeness through evolution and forward with God. A movement to and fro, flowing through our being, building the kingdom of God in the manifestation of the Spirit of God.

These challenges require inner growth that can become painful. One has to move away from self to look inward and looking inward will not always give us what we want but it will surely gives us what we need to move beyond ourselves.

Growth is the only evidence of life but one cannot force growth on oneself or another.

This is honestly one of the best books I've read in a long time. I recently received a bachelor degree in psychology and I just started grad school for master's degree in professional mental health counseling. Dream work has always interested me, but boy was I in for a surprise after reading this book. Of course, the actual dream analysis steps are quite amazing. But there's TONS of other information in this book about inner growth. The pages literally drip with the stuff. As far as the 4 steps of dream analysis, I got a change to use them for the first time a few days ago with a fellow college cohort. She had an extremely powerful dream over 4 years ago that she was never able to fully understand. After a half hour going through the steps she knew exactly what the dream was about. Both she and I were speechless. It was an awesome experience. As someone who eventually wants to become a licensed professional counselor, with dream work being one of my modalities, this book is ESSENTIAL. I cannot recommend it enough. Really.

Dear Mr. Darcy

I can't seem to get enough of Pride and Prejudice and have read over 75 fan fic books relating to the original. I don't mind some sexual content, but detest books that have been written so that explicit sex seems to be the main content of the book. Fortunately this book is not one of those. I gave it 3 stars because I found it is not witty or clever enough to rate higher. It is simply written and straight forward. Darcy's conversation with Mr. Bennet is interesting. The last third of the book is better than the first two thirds.

Please Let This Be the Start of Another Splendid Series!

In a style similar to Jane Austen's Lady Susan and the first draft of Sense and Sensibility (Elinor and Marianne), bestselling Austenseque author, Amanda Grange's newest novel, Dear Mr. Darcy, retells Pride and Prejudice in epistolary form. Want to see what Darcy wrote to his cousins while living at Netherfield? Observe the Bennet sisters' correspondence with their friends, the Sotherton sisters? Witness the letters sent to and from Mr. and Mrs. Bingley and their children? Amanda Grange enables readers the opportunity to see all this and more in her illuminating and brilliantly executed Dear Mr. Darcy.

What I loved most about this retelling was the numerous and diverse list correspondents readers witness exchanging letters throughout the course of the novel. Besides Elizabeth and Darcy, readers observe the communications between Wickham and his cohorts, Mrs. Bennet and Mrs. Gardiner, Anne de Bourgh and Georgiana Darcy, and Mr. Darcy Senior and his son Fitzwilliam amongst many others. These characters help give a thorough illustration of everything that takes place in Pride and Prejudice by portraying the events through their varied and unique perspectives. After a major event, such as the Netherfield Ball or Lizzy's refusal of Mr. Collins, it was interesting (and amusing) to see the differing and detailed accounts recorded by several different characters.

Another aspect I took great pleasure was Ms. Grange new creations, the Sotherton sisters and the Bingley parents. The Sotherton sisters are three sisters who are friends with all five Bennet sisters. But because of their father's drinking and gambling problem, they are forced to abscond from their beloved Netherfield Park and retrench to Bath (like the Elliots do in Persuasion). Moreover, in Pride and Prejudice we never meet Mr. and Mrs. Bingley, but we know of their background and ambitions. And while we don't see it taking place in Jane Austen's novel, we could assume that the Bingley siblings were often corresponding with their parents. I enjoyed how Ms. Grange implemented these characters to enhance and flesh out the events of the story. Not only do they enlighten the reader about what is taking place, they are a source of high entertainment as well!

Speaking of entertainment, I cannot believe I am saying this, but my favorite epistler in this novel would have to be Mary Bennet! Mary corresponds with the middle Sotherton sister, Lucy, who is very similar in tastes and disposition to Mary. I just loved witnessing these two exchange letters about their quests to become a "Learned Women," their new tastes in literature, their "books of extracts," and Mr. Shackleton...

Masterful, dynamic, and absorbing - Dear Mr. Darcy is sure to please Janeites who appreciate the art of letter writing and are interested in seeing Pride and Prejudice retold through epistolary form! This reader dearly hopes that Amanda Grange will take up her quill, blotter, and wax sometime soon and gift the Austenesque genre with another Jane Austen novel in epistolary form!

Expected more....

I gave this two stars because although there was a interesting start to the letters it never climaxed well and ended with a thud. No final words from Mr. Darcy, he was gone almost the entire ending. His POV was needed more...and way too much time spent on Mary Bennet's letters (but I guess they were supposed to be the comic relief).

Disappointed

Disappointing. The original short story was cute, it had action and adventure in an alternate world. The short story had conflict with the king not wanting an administrator for a husband and the translator having suffered abuse at the hands of his brothers. While the translator was upset and affected by his past abuse, he did not let it define him and went on a quest to be useful and to prove his own worth, the king came to his rescue and both admitted their attraction and they lived happily ever after. Now the new book. Pros nice world, plenty of back story and additional characters. One of the things Derr does best is world building. Cons additional characters, too many to keep track of, they became distracting. Allen was a wimp, who alternated between bitchy and feeling sorry for himself through most of the book. The king was just an ass until he suddenly decided that he wanted to have sex with Allen. Manufactured drama of the high school kind! While the author usually writes a happily ever after story with some drama/angst this story was too pat and I might have enjoyed it more if I hadn't read the short story. I also agree with another reviewer who mentioned that the real purpose of this book was to open a new world for the following sequels.

Another great fantasy from Megan Derr

The Harken Empire consists of a complex combination of languages and classes, and has been at war in some way or another for far too long. The current High King is the perfect example of this. He’s an ex-soldier whose deceased husband was also a soldier. As often happens with Monarchs, since it’s been years since his husband died, he’s being pushed into marrying again. Enter prince Allen, a silver tongue (translator) who knows more than ten different languages fluently and has been training for the past two years for the position of High Consort, and who is nothing like the soldier partner High King Sarrica wants. Allen and Sarrica are both stubborn and determined, and despite Sarrica snubbing him at their first meeting, Allen is determined to do what he was trained for.

For those of you who may not know, the first version of “the High King’s Golden Tongue” was a short free read written for the Goodreads MM Group’s 2012 Don’t Read in the Closet event, and although I did enjoy the first edition, I felt that there was a lot missing. The new edition doesn’t just fill those holes, it creates a whole new landscape. For one, ‘alternative sexualities’ (such as the LGBTQ rainbow) are taken as being as normal as hetero leanings, and transgender people are accepted as being the gender they feel rather than what they are born as. For example, Sarrica’s first husband was male yet carried their children, and one of Allen’s siblings is asexual (obviously that’s not the term used, though). I must admit, I loved that acceptance, as it is how I feel it should be always. In top of that, the Harken Empire is made up of many different languages with many dialects and the confusions such things cause, yet gender is not taken into account when it comes to careers, lifestyle, or status.

I don’t know if I could say I had a best bit, per se, but I did love the fact that all of the main characters had their own strengths and weaknesses, the teasing between friends and family, and the way each character was affected by their past in different ways. To be honest, I couldn’t put it down, and my sister gave up trying to talk to me until I finished the book because I either didn’t hear her or had to ask her to repeat what she’d said. (I’ve actually trained myself to mostly not do that anymore, since it’s dangerous to be oblivious to what’s happening around you for hours on end.)

I would recommend the second edition of “The High King’s Golden Tongue” for anyone who enjoys reading stories with action, drama, fantasy, wit, or people who persevere despite the odds.

I will admit that I am a fan of Ms Derr’s but even so, I would put this story among the best she has written in the fantasy genre.

Emontionless and Boring

This novel had potential, but none of it was fulfilled. The characters never develop, the storyline is bland and un-engaging, and there is no romance or relationship development.

The world is never explained or detailed enough to make me interested. The most engaging scenes are skipped over entirely to detail the discussion and planning that comes after. The writing is bland and flat and barely fits with the medieval style fantasy world, sometimes using too modern language.

The only redeeming qualities are the characters are unique and the sentence structure and grammar are decent.

Malhotra knew Indira Gandhi well from 1956 onward, as a correspondent for Britain's Guardian and as the Times of India' s Delhi editor. In a superb, balanced, riveting portrait, he assesses both strengths and flaws of the dominant, assertive prime minster who from early childhood identified with Joan of Arc, and who, like St. Joan, was betrayed by those she trusted, assassinated in 1984 by her Sikh bodyguards. Completely identifying herself with her nation, this indefatigable daughter of Nehru turned the world's largest democracy into a virtual dictatorship by declaring an Emergency in 1975. After her electoral defeat, imprisonment and her triumphant return to power in 1980, she adopted a paranoid leadership style and blandly tolerated corruption as economic disparities widened, according to Malhotra. Yet he credits her with holding India together, making it the preeminent nonaligned power, maintaining democracy and pushing through the Green Revolution which enabled her country to feed itself self-sufficiently. Biographies of Indira Gandhi have encompassed either wild adulation or bitter opposition. Malhotra's portrait is the most balanced of any currently available. As an Indian journalist, Malhotra interviewed the prime minister numerous times, acquiring a knowledge of and sympathy for Gandhi's familial and political complexities. He describes with sensitivity her childhood in the Nehru family and its ambivalent influence on her maturing process. With discernment he also examines how her career was affected by her father, Jawalharal Nehru, and her marriage. He suggests that some of Gandhi's most controversial acts, such as her declaration of a state of emergency and her violence against the Sikhs, may have been due to her struggle as a woman in Indian politics. Malhotra's work reflects authority and intelligent observation and is highly recommended.
