Thorough and real, Vail's book is a good read

As a Hammond B3 player for more years than I'd like to admit, I WILL admit I enjoyed this book tremendously. Now, it's not a tech manual, but I thought the book was laid out very well. It gave a good description of who Laurens Hammond was, such as being inventor of the electric clock. When doing research there's always gonna be some folks out there who may disagree with some statement, but that's just natural. I think that Mark Vail did an incredibly thorough job of researching this instrument and its history. He showed that he has a personal interest in it as well. A lot of people can just write a book 'cause they're paid to, but Mark has passion for the B. He showed it all the way through. I liked the reproductions of some of the original brochures, with the pictures of the different models. I remember those from when I was a kid -- my mother went to buy a Hammond and brought those brochures home. Quite often when I'm talking with someone about a particular model, I'll take out Mark's book and show them the photos and descriptions. He gives the year the models were built, what their price was -- that sort of stuff is very helpful and just plain fun to know.

Comprehensive Hammond and Leslie Info Under One Roof

Previous to the publcation of Vail's book, newcomers seeking to penetrate the mystique surrounding the Hammond organ had to rely on a diffuse smattering of sources for information. Most such sources are commercial: technicians, restorers, shops dealing in vintage musical gear, etc. Though many of these specialists are deeply knoweldgable and provide great products and services, it's a small and competitive community, which can make it difficult for the curious novice to get objective information. As a younger keyboard nut, I personally bugged enough of those people to learn that most do not have the time or energy to play the role of educator, especially if a sale is not imminent.
Playing this role is exactly the point, though, when you have a book to sell, and Vail approaches this task with a thoroughness, integrity, and love of the subject that make this one of the best books of its kind. No. it's not an exhaustive technical reference, nor the end-all of any debate about the Hammond. It's not meant as such, any more than a docent-guided tour of a famous museum is meant to replace a PhD in art history. Rather, it's the beginning of a journey, and for this subject, a better beginning than we've ever had.
Among Vail's many sources are longtime Hammond exec Alan Young, who also shed light on the legacy of John Hanert, the engineer who made many of Laurens Hammond's ideas work, rotary speaker inventor Don Leslie, and a who's who of the jazz, rock, and gospel players that imprinted the Hammond-Leslie sound on our consciousness to the degree that even people who've never heard the name of the instrument recognize "that sound." While I haven't fact-checked every page, it is simply absurd to suggest any generalization that the sources are suspect or the information inaccurate.
Overall, this is an enjoyable and informative read that can save you a ton of legwork in approaching the realm of the mighty Hammond. The better part of a century lies between us and its conception, and some current repairers and restorers scrape part numbers off components so their work can't be duplicated. In such a world, Vail's book is as objective as it gets.

I had borrowed a copy of this book from a friend, and after skimming it, decided then and there I had to have my own copy; so I bought one.
It's great to see that someone took the time to research and write such an informative and interesting book on a very "niche" piece of the music industry.
It should be required reading for anyone interested in the Hammond organ, and it's history. Because of the amount of pictures and quotes, it makes for very "easy" reading. I finished it in about one day, and still refer to it!
I recommend it, highly!

Absolutely brilliant

I believe it's the best book on idioms out there. I've used the previous parts with my ESL students and I must say the series saved the day (class) so many times I have lost count.

Above all, the language is simple enough for an intermediate student to understand but not dull (most idiom books out there give you nothing but definitions). I really like George's sense of humour and his writing style. My students always leave the class with a feeling that they've learned something new and valuable.

An absolute must-have for ALL English students and teachers!

Understanding those quirly English expressions

If you want to be fluent in a foreign language, it's not enough to learn the literal meaning of vocabulary and understand the grammar. You have to devote some time to getting your head around idioms, those phrases that have a special meaning that differs from their literal one. George Sandford's book presents 101 of these expressions, listed in alphabetical order. The author gives a brief but clear explanation of the meaning of each idiom in turn and includes an example of how it might be used in a particular situation. Each idiom starts on a new page, and there's a link back to the table of contents that makes navigation as easy as pie.

If you are an intermediate learner of English and want to take your knowledge further, you can benefit hugely from this little book. This is the most accurate book on the tabs for these songs that i have found so far... i cant really think of any bad things to put down on this product so if ur into tabs and metallica then get this book. But be sure to get the more expensive one. the cheaper one doesnt have the feature with the cut in holes and binded up spine so that it may just open and stay there without u having to push the page out or put something on it to stop the page from turning. its quite annoying when ur trying to play the tabs and the page keeps turning.

Guys the story is amazing,but this can't be the end! There are so many questions left to answer. Is Will a Styx, will he find Elliot again, where is the planet going, where is home? These are just a few. I loved the twist and turns of this series. I was always ready for the next book to come out. If this is truly the ending then I will be disappointed. There is more left to tell. Please close the series out properly guys. I have loved this series all the way through please don't ruin it by leaving so much unwritten.

I thought that the Tunnels books were absolutely amazing. They have been the best series that I have read in a long time UNTIL I read this book. I thought that the 5th book kind of changed the direction in which the series was heading, but it wasn't too weird for me and I absolutely loved it. However, when you add certain (SPOILER) extraterrestrial elements into this kind of book it just ruined it for me. The series was absolutely amazing and didn't need anything like that in it at all. I was very disappointed by how the series ended. It's like I wasted my time reading through all 6 of them. But I have to admit a lot of great series have a disappointing last book, so it should have been expected.

I had really mixed feelings about this series. Some of the books were better than others and there were high points and low points. Some things went severely downhill with this book though. There were some really disgusting parts that were disappointing to see in a juvenile fiction book and I had mixed feelings about the ending.

A surprisingly good story!

I thought this story was better than I expected. It had a great variety of elements, which kept me involved in the story throughout. Also it was longer than many other story's of the same type. All around it was worth the price and a nice surprise to find! Good job! I look forward to trying more from this author.
