Deeply Disappointing Historical Fiction from Poul Anderson

Poul Anderson is a huge name in science fiction but if "The Golden Slave" is a typical example of his forays into other genres I'm glad he primarily stayed with science fiction.

Set between the Sicilian Slave Uprising and the Spartacus rebellion, Anderson has grabbed onto several historical facts and figures twisting them to tell a story of struggle, survival, and adjustment. Historical issues aside the phrasing, descriptions, and plot flow were almost unbearable to read. Granted it is clear he wants to use language to show the struggles of the barbarian prince, Eodan, in foreign lands but when he isn't speaking, when he isn't thinking, the prose needs to be much clearer.

The sudden viewpoint shifts and plot jumps coupled with odd characters reminds me of pulp science fiction but in a historical novel they just felt out of place. Perhaps when original published in 1960 this tone was common to historical fiction as well but I have my strong doubts based on other historical novels I've read from the 1950s and 1960s. I could never connect strongly to any character and the romantic overlaps felt forced.

Finally Wonder Publishing Group has done this book no service with the layout of the book. The good news may be that the font is huge so you can easily read it but it also feels wasteful. There are some areas were the text has been stretched out awkwardly that is a clear indication that some editor only the way didn't do a thorough job. Poul Anderson deserved better care even if the text is subpar.

Quick and Dirty

There are exactly 100 words in the book that are used in a variety of examples and ways. It's a great quick and dirty way to dive right into Japanese and walk out with some basic vocabulary. There are some small paragraphs on grammar usage, pronunciation, and other details to the language but for the most part it's just words and phrases.

This isn't the first time I've studied some Japanese and most of the basic words I've got a good handle on but I'm finding this book to be a great resource for solidifying the basics. I would say that this is a great pre-trip book, something you go through and memorize before a trip but leave home once you depart. For the trip itself I've purchased a proper phrasebook-Frommer's Japanese PhraseFinder & Dictionary (Frommer's Phrase Books) - and while being more textbook like then this one it does include a more comprehensive japanese/english phrase dictionary. I'll be traveling with that one but using this one to get some basic words and phrases under my belt.

Painful, but compelling.

I finished this book two days ago and have been a little perplexed on how to write the review. "Shut Up" doesn't have the sort of quirky or witty dialogue I usually enjoy, the world is ours and it's really not at all about the world, there weren't characters I adored or would gush over, and the happy ending is well... more hope for happy than happy.

Despite everything it didn't have that I usually find appealing in books, what "Shut Up" did have was honesty and power. Mary, the main character, is one whom I found I could relate and empathize with on a deep level. Her pain, her helplessness and confusion touched me, drew me in, nearly compelled me to keep reading, praying that somehow, there would be light at the end of the tunnel. Hoping with her, crashing with her, her pain nearly bringing me to tears--I was unable to put this book down.

Tibbet's characters are real people, and perhaps that's what is so compelling about this book. We all know people like Mary's mother, father, brother, and sisters. It makes them all very accessible, and also is probably part of what makes you feel so much like you could be reading your own story.

If you've ever felt like you weren't good enough, you couldn't do anything right, have been belittled or bullied (whether by family or "friends"), "Shut Up" is a must read. The story Mary and Paul tell is painful, real, but there is also hope. It finishes with the reminder that childhood is not forever, that people grow up and move on--even our tormentors--and that we are not alone. Sooner or later, you'll find someone who will stand up for you, who will notice you, and who will assure you that you are valuable. And that hope isn't shoved in the reader's face like a life lesson or a great theme--it is integrated in the same way the story is told--realistically.

Five stars for a compelling, honest look inside the mind and heart of a child who is bullied, and five stars for the beautiful conclusion of hope.

SHUT UP!

Well...let me start of by saying how much I love the cover and title of this book!

When I received SHUT UP in the mail I was a little distraught at how small it was. It only has 108 pages, and normally I don't even bother with books this short. I can read a 400 page novel in about 3 & 1/2 hours, so I tend to buy longer novels or I feel like I'm wasting my time and money. I mean how much can an Author really tell me in 108 pages?? The answer in all honesty is usually NOT MUCH!

BUT Anne Tibbets packs so much raw emotion and reality into 108 short pages that I honestly felt like I came away with just as much information as if it had been 200 pages longer.

I am a little sad that I could relate so easily to the characters and their struggles... I could feel the pain that 12 year old Mary went through on a daily basis, how she felt invisible some times, but mostly wished she could be invisible just to avoid making mistakes or calling attention to her own awkwardness. My heart raced every time she was running away or every time she clutched a bottle of pills in her hand, just ready for it all to end. I wonder how many children/teens feel this way on a daily basis and how many are dealing with some sort of depression or feelings of worthlessness. The reality of this book saddens and terrifies me, since I have five children of my own.

On some level I could relate to the Mary's mom in the book...her actions, while inexcusable, seemed to stem from so much stress and helplessness, that by the end of the book I felt a *little* sorry for her....but not too much. Besides wanting to slap some sense into her or maybe take a hanger to her (let her have a taste of her own medicine) I just wanted to shake her until she stopped treating Mary like some unwanted step child. I can relate to her stress and feeling helpless, but not so much to her lashing out at her other children. Unfortunately, I'm sure many children/teens *CAN* relate to this scenario on some level. If not the physical, then definitely the mental abuse.

Words harshly spoken can have such devastating affects on the life of a child/teen. This book serves, in my opinion, serves as a reminder that no one can know how much a person has endured, how much a person has been pushed, and how much more a person can take. I pray to God that my children never feel the way Mary and Paul felt in this book... I hope that they always know how beautiful, smart, and wanted they are. ALL children should be able to feel that way, ALL children should be made to feel heard!

Powerfully Maddening!

Shut Up made me sad and angry all at once. Mary is but still a child who still plays with Barbie Dolls for Pete's sakes and her older sister is no more than a bully! I can't understand why the parents bowed down and let Gwen run amok and carry on in their home like she did. It was appaling and sickening.

I know to a certain degree they just wanted to pacify Gwen because the more you'd argue with her the longer and louder she'd get. But the way I look at it is Gwen made her own bed and even once they tried to overlook that she had gotten pregnant and wanted to marry the creep father of the child, and extend an olive branch of help she was the most ungratefullest person in the world! You can only help somebody so much. They have got to do something for themself and let me tell you what...my folks would never have tolerated this behavior from me or my sibs. Pregnant or not had I hollered at them either I'd be picking my teeth up off the ground or sitting in the front yard with my suitcases!

Gwen was just a very negative person and she wanted everybody around her to be just as miserable as she was. I wanted to reach out to Mary and hug her and let her know I was there and that she wasn't alone even though I knew she was just a character in a book she felt so freaking real to me!

The title of the book is Shut Up only it seems weird because Mary never really "said" anything! Bless her heart she just kept taking the abuse, and yes that is what it was, time and time again. The words of truth and pain were right there on the tip of her tongue so many times but she could never confide in anybody and after a while she began to blame herself and wonder why she could never do anything right.

Pretty useful vocabulary builder

I have been using this set of 3 discs for about 5 weeks and have now ordered levels 2 & 3. The first disc is real basic stuff that gets you started, the second disc has lists of various types of vocabulary, like common nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs, and prepostions, and it is really worth going over these time and time again so as to master both the vocabulary and the pronunciation of these basic word lists. At least once you have go the basic vocabulary down, you have something to build on, so it gets easier.
Disc three is more phrase oriented, though it should be born in mind that each lesson is designed to illustrate some kind of grammatical rule. For some reason my disc set came with the wrong book (French instead of Spanish) so I have relied totally on the audio, though I do have a basic Spanish book that I refer to occasionally if I can't properly identify the spelling of a word from what I hear.
The only beef I do have is that while some of the phrases are obviously very useful, like "donde esta el banco mas cercano?" (where is the nearest bank?), others are not. You can just imagine landing in a Spanish speaking country and the first thing out of your mouth is asking for the nearest ATM or bathroom, but not all of the pattern sentences in the exercises are as useful.
It IS hard work learning Spanish this way, but if you do a lot of driving or can take a CD player with you wherever you are, then it is also incredibly economical with what would probably otherwise be dead time used productively. Being able to communicate in Spanish is an incredibly valuable skill in the workplace these days, and even if you don't use it for that, there are so many Spanish-speaking tourism destinations in the Western hemisphere that learning Spanish while you drive around can only widen your scope. I have already found that after 5 weeks of using this plus the Instant Immersion Spanish discs in my car I can understand lengthy chunks of spoken Spanish, read newspapers and understand 85%, and understand Spanish language posts on the Internet tolerably well. My speech still needs a lot of work, but that is to be expected.
So, yes, I do recommend this set of discs, but I would use them in conjunction with something else for variety. You will still spend a lot less and learn a lot more than you would going to classes or on a course. Spanish will be my fifth language, if you count English as one, so I do know of what I speak.

Excellent for beginners

I found the lesson structure very effective. They begin simply and build on previous lessons. I had no prior experience with Spanish, but after completing the Level 1 tapes I would feel comfortable trying to communicate basic needs and questions.
I agree with some of the other reviewers that a separate book would be helpful to learn written Spanish. However, the included booklet was all I needed to successfully learn the vocabulary on these tapes. (By the way, I've tried other language methods that do not provide ANY written materials which was very ineffective for me personally. I need to see a word to fully comprehend it and how to say it.)
I ordered the cassettes (since the CD version was backordered), and I did experience some slight volume variances. The volume changes were slight and rare, so overall they didn't impact my ability to learn the materials. I've just ordered Level 2 on CD, so hopefully that won't be an issue.
My one complaint--about the cassettes specifically--is the difficulty of finding the start of a lesson while rewinding. That's an issue with the medium, not the manufacture of the tapes. Hopefully the CDs will make finding the lesson starts easier.

Convenient

Hello.
Nearly all of these lessons are a convenient size for those around-town trips - not too long, not too short - and are a great way to use some of those otherwise-lost minutes driving to and from work.
Any less-than-ideal elements to these CDs? Yes. I have no opportunity to speak the Spanish I'm learning (apart from speaking along with the CDs), so most of my skill, so far, is in listening and reading rather than speaking. However, I can tell that when I find myself in a situation requiring the use of the language, it will be an easy next step.
I've nearly completed this first set and will soon order the second.

Captured my attention from the very beginning

This book captured my attention right from the beginning. I brought it in to work to read on my lunch hours but ended up taking it home so that I could read it in its entirety because I did not want to keep putting it down. It was a great book with a surprising ending! I can't wait for the next one!
