John Walsh, one of the great masters of the subject, has written a superb book on probability. It covers at a leisurely pace all the important topics that students need to know, and provides excellent examples. In this wonderful book, John Walsh presents a panoramic view of Probability Theory, starting from basic facts on mean, median and mode, continuing with an excellent account of Markov chains and martingales, and culminating with Brownian motion. Throughout, the author's personal style is apparent; he manages to combine rigor with an emphasis on the key ideas so the reader never loses sight of the forest by being surrounded by too many trees. As noted in the preface, "To teach a course with pleasure, one should learn at the same time." Indeed, almost all instructors will learn something new from the book, (e.g. the potential-theoretic proof of Skorokhod embedding) and at the same time, it is attractive and approachable for students. ----Yuval Peres, Microsoft

Excellent Book

I have taken several courses in probability in engineering and in the math department, and definitely I can assure that this is one of the most beautiful textbooks in probability. It is highly rigorous but written with a pleasant style. Before the reading of this book I really hated the probability, after the reading of this book I love that is related with probability.

A beautiful book on probaility

This book really deserves to be more widely known - just one review so far is absurd for a book of this quality. It is one of the most vivid and engaging book on probability I've seen so far.

I cannot see that it really has much competition. All the books on probability (I've seen) that nurture your intuition have little to no measure theory; conversely most measure theory books assume you already have the intuition. But students of the subject who don't have the best probabilistic intuition AND are comfortable with abstract mathematics at the senior-undergrad-or-beginning-graduate level are not really served by any books on the market (again, as far as I know). For example, Ash, Billingsley, Resnick, Rosenthal et al don't help you with intuition. And on the other side, there are too many books to mention, but they typically don't tell you what a sigma algebra or for that matter a filtration is. Walsh does both - he gives you the intuition and the rigor.

I believe this book will work best for people who have the background described above. My own background is in machine learning, and Walsh's book is extremely well-suited to my needs. But I think it would also work beautifully for students who have done the basic course in probability and want to see more. Or perhaps people whose education in probability has been scattershot and uneven; Walsh will pull it together for you.

It's very clearly written, with an understated "aliveness" that is rare and doesn't distract from the subject.

About the Author
John R. (Jack) Deller, Jr. is professor of electrical and computer engineering at Michigan State University where he directs the Speech Processing Laboratory. He received the 1998 IEEE Signal Processing Magazine Best Paper Award and the 1997 IEEE Signal Processing Society Meritorious Service Award for his six-year service as editor in chief of the IEEE Signal Processing Magazine. Dr. Deller is the coauthor of Digital Signal Processing and the Microcontroller (Prentice Hall, 1999) and currently serves as associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing. He is a Fellow of the IEEE.

John H. L. Hansen is an associate professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder; he holds appointments in the Department of Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Dr. Hansen serves as associate director for the Center for Spoken Language Understanding (CSLU) and director of research activities of the Robust Speech Processing Laboratory at CSLU. He has served as technical advisor to the U.S. delegate for NATO, and he is associate editor of the IEEE Transactions on Speech and Audio Processing and of the IEEE Signal Processing Letters. Dr. Hansen received the 1990 National Science Foundation Research Initiation Award and has been named a Lilly Foundation Teaching Fellow for contributions to the advancement of engineering education.

John G. Proakis is a faculty member of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Northeastern University. His professional experience is in the general area of digital communications and digital signal processing. Dr. Proakis is the author of Digital Communications (McGraw-Hill, 3rd ed., 1995) and the coauthor of Introduction to Digital Signal Processing (Prentice Hall, 3rd ed., 1996); Advanced Digital Signal Processing (Macmillan, 1992); Communication Systems Engineering (Prentice Hall, 1994); Digital Signal Processing Using MATLAB (PWS, 1997); and Contemporary Communication Systems Using MATLAB (PWS, 1998). He is a Life Fellow of the IEEE.

The best comprehensive overview of speech processing

I've seen a lot of books on Speech processing, but this one's the best by quite some margin. Rabiner & Schafer's classic could've edged this one out, but it's slightly dated now(1978 was a long time ago!) - it remains a great source for the fundamentals, though. However, this book is uptodate, as well as quite exhaustive in its coverage of the basics. One can get a solid grasp of basic speech processing(eg pitch analysis), synthesis, compression and recognition. The chapters on recognition, especially, are quite impressive,with detailed treatment of all the standard techniques in the field,including Dynamic time warping,Hidden Markov models & Neural networks. Everything from isolated word recognition to large vocabulary continuous speech recognition is touched upon.
This book is an ideal starting point for exploring the world of speech processing,which is a very rich area of research and has virtually limitless commercial applications,too.
A word of caution though - this is not for the layman.One requires a bit of a background in mathematics,and a little knowledge of digital signal processing won't hurt either.
I have only nice things to say about this book.The only possible crib could be the hefty price tag,but then this is typical of books in this field.
All in all,it's an excellent textbook,which ought to be read by everyone working in speech processing.

Good overview

This is an attempt to cover many aspects of speech processing, including modeling, coding, synthesis, enhancement, and recognition. Since each of the mentioned areas is a thick book on its own, the present book does not and cannot provide in depth coverage. I like some stories told in the book, like the development of the mechanical vocoder. But I find it to be wordy and in many instances, somehow impractical, like the exagerated mathematical treatment of the acoustic tube model. Also, the mathematical notations tend to be awkward. Due to technological advances, many topics contained in this book are already outdated.

A good reference, but too theoretical

This book is very thorough, but at times it seems like the authors go out of their way to keep their discussion on a very theoretical level.
Chapter 1: A highly theoretical review of DSP. You need good knowledge of DSP to understand it.
Chapter 2: Goes over the human speech production and recognition systems. Here you get some practical info on the spectral and time-domain properties that distinguish speech sounds.
Chapter 3: Describes a model of the speech production based on a series of pulses passed through filters that correspond to features of the human speech production system. Practical issues such as which zero and pole values work best are left as an exercise to the reader.
Chapter 4: A lot of mathematics relating long-term statistical properties to those of a short frame of speech data. Contains good info on how to find recursive formulas for statistical properties of speech frames. It is a great shame that the authors don't include examples in MATLAB or pseudo code.
Chapter 5: Linear Prediction. Discusses a mathematical algorithm for creating a prediction filter that could be used to predict the next value in a series of data. In speech processing we are interested in using the coefficients of this prediction filter to encapsulate the properties of a speech frame. Examples of 1st,, 2nd, and 3rd order filters would have gone along way to illustrate how to implement this. There are some good formulas to measure the degree of similarities between speech frames based on their LP filter coefficients.
Chapter 6: Introduces the concept of the cepstrum. Cepstral analysis allows you to de-convolve speech data to separate the excitation source from the vocal tract filter. That way you can lifter out (a play on filter out) the excitation (responsible for pitch) and focus only on the vowel sounds. As always, how to make it work is left as an exercise.
The rest of the book is about speech coding and speech recognition. My class did not cover the later chapters, so I only read the parts that applied to projects.
The book helped me understand speech processing journal articles which tend to assume a lot of background knowledge.
The theoretical background that this book provides is necessary; good engineers need to understand the underpinnings of their bag of tricks. It is painful, however, at times. To apply the information in this book, you will certainly need a good mentor and a lot of tinkering in MATLAB.

I have read several comments concerning the absence of problem solutions in reference to this book. It maybe because there are so many options to choose from to solve various problems. I suspect that the cost of extending the book size with answers in the back is not justifiable to keep the price down. A CD would have been nice but they didn't feel this way.

I have a B.S. ME degree and have practice my engineering craft for quite some time. I am preparing for Grad-school and further to a Doctorate. An idea I am working with is an App, FX Math solver and FX Calculus solver for iPad. This solver is wonderful. There are others that I use as an adjunc but the FX solvers can shoe either the answer or the step by step solution if you formulate the problem correctly. There are some other good ones so there should not be

In conclusion, I recommend using a math solver for problems in the book that will calculate and plot. There are a number of them out there.

Uses no more than 3 colors!

You might think its not a big issue but when you notice how much you pay for this book and no color included other than the front and back covers, it's a complete rip off! It also makes the book a bit dull n boring to read. What a shame. Main colors i noticed were orange, black, and white!
FOR WILEY: your way of denoting velocity on three different books are different and is really annoying. Dynamics (T, well technically change for KE), fluids (u), and this book (v). What the heck..
If it wasnt for this issues this book would've gotten a five star raiting. Good book, explained content nicely.

Used it for a class at school last winter. I found the explanations pretty easy to understand and the examples helpful. For the most part the writing style isn't incredibly exciting or anything, but I don't require that from my textbooks. Sometimes I still reference it for other classes or personal projects when I need some sort of refresher.

The book further analyzes the lessons of Fukushima in comparative perspective, focusing on the politics of safety and emergency preparedness. It first compares the different policies and procedures adopted by various nuclear facilities in Japan and then discusses the lessons learned—and not learned—after major nuclear accidents and incidents in other countries in the past. The book's editors conclude that learning lessons across nations has proven to be very difficult, and they propose new policies to improve global learning after nuclear accidents or attacks.

Proud and lucky

The age range suggested for this book is 12-15, but I found it very appropriate for my fourth grader and her biography book report. She told me that Malala's story made her feel proud to be a girl and lucky to be an American.

The start of my holiday didn’t start out at all how I had planned when I was kidnapped by a crazy guy telling me I was his soul mate and his to keep forever. Imagine my surprise to learn he is a Silverman and supposedly sane. Richard wants me to give him a chance, but I don’t know if I can handle Richard’s overprotectiveness. I already had that with my brother and I didn’t want it in my relationship.

I waited so long for this book and I was soo happy when it came out :)
The story is about the seriously hot Richard and Baily. Baily is slightly handicap since she has a sight disorder . Her parents died when she was very young and she grows up with her older brother ( by the way her brother was awesome maybe he will get his own book ? ) . She is excited for her 18 birthday, she wants's to get free and live her own life without an overprotective brother or the bitchy shanks at her school . Few days before her birthday she meets Richard . Who immediately recognize his mate in her since he waited soo long for her his alpha instinct kinked in, in full gear . Richard was a hero like i love them hoooot overprotective and a little crazy .

So why not 5 stars ? I had issue not only with this book but with Stephan's book as well in both books the hero sleeps with another woman the night before he meets his mate . I don't know but i just don't like books where the hero has sex with someone how is not the heroine even when haven't met jet .
So pleas Hazel Gover don't do it in your next book pleas .

I love love Hazel Gower Caveman instinct series this could be read as a standalone book. But I would read it in order starting with Stephan story first. Richard is a beautiful man who just wants to find his soul mate and feels like he is never going to find her, but fate steps in and Richard finally finds what his been looking for in Bailey his one true love his soul mate. But when Richard sees her he knows who she is to him so of course his caveman instinct kicks in and he takes her from her friends in a public place. So Bailey brother steps in to get his sister back and to make sure Richard stays away from Bailey. But in the end Richard gets what he has always wanted his soul mate and Bailey finally gets what she wants she gets a Silverman who is completely in love with her and who would do anything for her including keeping Bailey safe. If you have not read any of these books read them because you are going to love the author and her books.

I have waited a month for this book i loved Stephen so much and this one didn’t disappoint me. This one felt more adult then book 1 and gave you the closer to Stephen and jade story also introduced you to the rest of the family i cant wait for book three. I got a copy for an honest review and it was so worth the wait i hated that i finished the book now have to wait for her next one.
