Three stars hides a polarised opinion of the short stories in this anthology: some were excellent, wonderfully-written, thought-provoking and transported me away to a different world. Others left me cold, or worse, alienated, wondering what on earth the author was on about. Maybe I am just dense in some way, but I do wonder where the skill is in writing something so obscure that it's not even remotely accessible to a well-read general audience.

Having said that, I'll continue to read such anthologies as it does draw the attention to one or two new writers worth watching out for.

About the Author
Arnold Hauser was born in Hungary and studied literature and the history of art at the universities of Budapest, Vienna, Berlin and Paris. In 1921 he returned to Berlin to study economics and sociology under Ernst Troeltsch. From 1923 to 1938 he lived in Vienna where he began work on The Social History of Art. He lived in London from 1938 until 1977, when he returned to his native Hungary. He died in Budapest in 1978. Jonathan Harris is Senior Lecturer in Art History and Critical Theory at the University of Keele. He is the author of Federal Art and National Culture: The Politics of Identity in New Deal America (1995), co-author of Modernism in Dispute: Art Since The Forties (1993) and co-editor of Art in Modern Culture: An Anthology of Critical Texts (1992).

This true account of the scandal that enveloped the discovery in 1898 of an inscribed casket said to contain the ashes of the Buddha, is set against the background of the high noon of the British Raj. In January 1898 a British landowner, William Claxton Pepp�, excavated a large Buddhist brick stupa on his estate close to India’s border with Nepal. At a depth of 24 feet he uncovered a huge stone coffer. What made this discovery so important was an inscription found on the top of one of the reliquary caskets - declaring it to contain ashes of the Buddha. This news aroused world-wide interest since no other so well authenticated relics of the Buddha had ever been found. A Highly Detailed and Accurate Review of Facts.

A controversy is skillfully dissected by Charles Allen in this treatise. By taking the reader to current politics in the areas Buddha used to wander, Mr. Allen perfectly sets the stage in his Preface to explain politics of that area some 2,600 years ago. Then he takes us to the Prologue to explain politics of Buddha's time. I highly recommend reading the preface so that a reader unfamiliar with Buddhist history can correlate today to Buddha's time. Then he takes the reader to a highly detailed and factually accurate account of the controversy. I am amazed by the effort Mr. Allen took in providing an account of the controversy in this manner from the days of British India to the era of Internet. However, I am slightly, very slightly, disappointed that the book does not include clear pictures of the vase inscription captured through a modern day high-resolution camera. Nevertheless, this book kept me riveted all the way through.

This is a scholarly book. It's focus is more on the nature of relationships among the early pioneers of modernizing archaeology in a country where huge potential for archaeological discovery needed organization than about Dr. Fuhrer or Gautama Siddhartha (Sakyamnuni buddha). As a son of the British Raj, I found lots of personal details that enthralled me. However, anyone may read this book as a fascinating and empathic study of human nature and our attempts to relearn the values that, still today, we must live by -- values already known and written about before the time of Jesus.

interesting look at a controversial archaeological dig

This book is about an archeological dig in the late 1800s at a site where the remains of the Buddha might have been buried. Did the German in charge really find what he said he found? Was he in the wrong place? Did someone else find something more important? Was there deception and fakery involved? Whom can we really trust if we're told of bone fragments? It's interesting that we still might never get to know the truth about who found what because of politics, which make digging more and more difficult in Northern India near Nepal.

The author had me hooked on p. 35, when he explained that in those ancient times, the locals would not have used words like "miles" or "meters" for their distances. They used "khos"--the furthest distance a cow's mooing will be heard. Someone who gives us detail like this knows how to engage his reader. This book has lots of good pictures and no footnotes. That helps a non-historian like me. The generous use of pictures lets us to see what the archeologists were seeing as they explored.

The book is well-edited. The only mistake I found was "secene" for "scene" on p. 265.

Some readers might object to so much ancient history thrown in to give us the background, but since we're talking about events from 2500 years ago, a lot of historical background is necessary. True historians might demand some footnotes.

He has also researched and taught algorithms at MIT.

Valuable but Dated

This book clearly demonstrates why the name Rod Stephens on the cover is enough to sell a book or a product: the writing is smooth and captivating, and he shows an easy command of both the programming language and the programming envriroment. Were I still using even VB 6 (as I know many of you out there are), I'd find this book simply invaluable.

But VB.net changed the game (and the language) significantly and for what appears to be a long time. Therefore, DO NOT buy this book based on the "Ready-to-run Code" claim. Try to run this code on any verson of VB after the dawn of VB.net, and you'll get a jolly complete lesson in handling errors -- at best,

With that caveat understood, I can say that the book is filled to the brim with valuable, timeless algorithms that you can learn to implement in newer verions of VB. To give you an example, the code for a QuickSort in the book calls for recursion, just as any implementation of the quicksort algorithm - in fact, the algorithm itself is recursive. The trick comes in learning how to call a function from within the function itself in later versions of VB. A hint: the error in VB10 tells you that you have a "dimension" mismatch. Considering that the only thing passed to the function that could be causing that problem is the references to the array-to-be-sorted. But you don't want to pass a copy of the array to be local to the new instance of quicksort. Thus, you'd want to pass the whole array: ary(). Works in any version of Microsoft Basic that I curently have, except for VB 2008 and VB 2010. After all, this is an indexed array with arity 2, so the complaint that I'm sending arrays with one too many dimensions seems ridiculous on first (and last)reading: after all, ary() implies a 1-dimensional array, while ary(idx,data) repesents a two-dimensional array. And, yes, there are a whole lot of issues peripheral to this, like am I passing by value or by ref, why not use a global variable (yuck!), and so on. That's a sampling of what I got from the MSDN help system.

Turns out that the solution is simple, and I was on the right track to begin with: I needed to just pass ary as a parameter - no parentheses, no other terms or modifiers. And it works. But the recursion code does not look like the recursion code for VB4.

If you need to learn about the classical algorithms, and time is of the essense, I'm sure that the book you want will be coming out "real soon now." But, if you've got the time to translate VB4 solutions into VB 2010 solutions, well, maybe you're the one writing that new version of the book.... You'll certainly learn more about the algorithms and your copy of VB than you could in any one other book. And that's not a bad deal, if you've the time.

This is a late 20th Century book available at a bargain price from Amazon. Its scope is commendable, covering all the important data structures, with an especially good coverage of hashing. The source code is still relevant and useful, and is made readily available on an included floppy disk. Highly recommended.
